The Truemmelbach-falls in Lauterbrunnen are certainly worth a half-daytrip, when you stay in Interlaken and you may easily combine it with excursions to Wengen, Muerren or Jungfraujoch. These waterfalls are quite unique and they are also listed as a UNESCO-World-heritage: You may take an elevator up the mountain and you may see there 10 glacier-waterfalls INSIDE the mountain - a long path will lead you to the most spectacular places.
These waterfalls alone are draining the Eiger, Moench & Jungfrau-glaciers at this side of the mountains - 20.000 litres of water per second will rush through these cascades, everything is wet and hazy inside the mountain, but not at all slippery, all of the tunnels are lighted well, and you might need about 1 hour to see and enjoy everything !
The entrance-fee for the Truemmelbach-falls is 10 Sfr. and includes the ride on the lift, that takes you up the mountain, BUT you still have to step up many steps in order to get to the highest point. Make sure you step down all the way to the entrance-gate, otherwise you will miss some of the best waterfalls !!
Sorry, this place is NOT accessible for handicapped tourists !!
The lift just takes you to a higher place, where you may see the falls ONLY, when you are able to climb up hundreds of additional steps !!
The Truemmelbach-Falls are open April - November
    daily between 09.00a.m. and 05.00p.m.
    in July & August : 08.00a.m. - 06.00p.m. !!
The car-parking there is free of charge !!

    Eismeer - another station of
    Jungfraubahn

On your way to Jungfraujoch EISMEER is the name of the 3rd station and it is the one with the most interesting view in my personal opinion, because you may see the permanent glaciers of the Eiger from a short distance, standing inside the mountain, just looking out through 2 giant windows.
There is no ordinary path leading to these glaciers and only extreme mountain-climbers will ever get into that area in a height of about 3000 meters above sea-level.
Also at this station you will stop for about 10 minutes and you may get outside of the train in order to take pics or talk to a man about a horse...

  • Directions: To Eismeer (it means "ocean of ice") you may ONLY go by the Jungfraubahn. The trains will stop there ONLY when going upwards !!

    Japanese Gardens of Friendship
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just a few steps from the monastery of Interlaken and at the end of Hoehematte you may see this lovely Japanese Garden. It was a gift by the town of OTSU in Japan, a sister-town of Interlaken. Both places have many similarities : the lakes, the high surrounding mountains and a fertile, green landscape.
This garden is a great place to relax, it is open day and night without entrance-fee.

    Brienz - just 20km from

Brienz is a great place for a day-excursion and certainly a lot more beautiful and romantic than Interlaken and you will find it at the other end of the lake Brienz / Brienzersee. Brienz is a lot less hectic than Interlaken and it makes sense to spend at least 1-2 hours exploring the beautiful wooden houses of the village. Brunngasse is the most famous, but there are a lot more of beautifully decorated wooden houses all over town.
In general hotels in Brienz are about 10-20% less expensive than the ones in Interlaken, BUT they are mostly also a lot smaller & maybe also a bit less luxury than some of the Grand-hotels there.
Brienz is NOT a place for a sophisticated nightlife, but rather a place to relax and go to bed early in order to explore the beautiful surroundings the next day...
Brienz is well known for wood-carvings - you may see them in many of the shops, there is even a school for woodcarving !
When in Brienz, you should not miss :
Brunngasse - a street full of old, lovely wooden houses
    Brienzer Rothornbahn - a steam-train taking you in a hight of 2350m
Ballenberg - a museum of old houses from all parts of Switzerland
Get there by train from Interlaken OST
or drive on the highway south of the Brienzersee
or take the scenic road through the lovely villages at the north bank of Brienzersee / Lake Brienz !

  • Directions: Brienz is about 20km east of Interlaken. Go there by train from Interlaken OST or by car along the north-bank of Brienzersee or over the highway at the south-bank of the lake Brienz.

    The Jungfrau-Plateau
  • Tip Rating:
  • During perfect weather-conditions, THIS is the place to be : The Jungfrau-Plateau is a place, where you may get outside and have a great view of the surrounding mountains and the Grosse Aletschgletscher. The Plateau is a rather flat area, BUT it is also quite windy there and so it is icy and quite slippery even during the summer. There is the swiss flag in the centre and a fence made by ropes marks the area, that you are allowed to walk. That rope-fence is your only chance to get some hold, when walking - it might make sense to have good mountain-boots and/or walking-sticks there !
I was there end of october, in great sunshine and a part of the snow was soft, BUT at certain places it was really icy and dangerous !
Do NOT expect to be able to look down to Interlaken, you may just see the mountains behind of it in the panorama.

    Stepping down the Ice-palace /
    Eispalast

Eis-Palast / Ice Palace is another great sight on top of Jungfraujoch : It is a big area inside the mountain, where all of the corridors and all of the halls are made by solid ice. You may see various sculptures made of ice and you have to be careful, when walking, but there are hand-rails and somehow it was less slippery than outside at the Jungfrau-Plateau.
This part of the Jungfraujoch-attractions was not really so very special in my opinion, BUT of course it might make sense to go there on a day, when it is storming and too cold in order to get outside.
You will also see that most people skip that part of Jungfraujoch, but it might be a nice experience for children !

In a walking-distance of about 10 minutes through the tunnels of Jungfraujoch-station you will get to this interesting place : The Sphinx Observatory is located on top of a small, seperate mountain on Jungfraujoch and a lift will take up finnaly up to the Sphinx-platform. The main-part of the Sphinx is used by scientists only, but tourists may get outside of the building, at a terrace that faces all sides of the building and it is made by a steel-grate, so the snow will fall down and walking there will be rather safe thoughout the year. Plenty of birds will be waiting to be fed there and inside the Sphinx you will find a small cocktail-lounge and even a shop for precious Swiss watches.

    Interlaken - between the lakes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Interlaken is just a small village with 4000 inhabitants & 14000 hotelbeds , set in a beautiful surrounding and its main advantage is the fact, that you may start plenty of great excursions FROM Interlaken, and besides this you may also go to the cinema, various night-clubs, discos, go to the Kursaal etc. and of course there is Mystery World for all fans of Erich von Daenicken's theories...
Interlaken got its name for the fact that it was built right in the middle between Brienzersee and Thunersee. Both lakes are combined by the river Aare, but ships cannot go through all the way, as the river is partly very small and narrow.
When you want to get from one lake to the other, you may take the train, it takes just 4 minutes and costs 2,20 sfr one way , BUT normally NO conductor will ask for your ticket... Walking to the other station will take about 25 minutes !!
After arrival at the stations Interlaken Ost or West you will always have enough time to catch the ship, because the ship-station is just opposite of the train-stations. That way you could easily explore both lakes at the same day - preferably by a day-ticket.

  • Directions: Interlaken is almost in the very centre of Switzerland, between Brienzersee and Thunersee, about 50 km east of Bern.

Jungfraujoch - the sight everybody is heading to
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jungfraujoch is certainly the major attraction of Interlaken and the reason, why millions of tourists are coming there every year. The Jungfraubahn takes you up to Jungfraujoch, the highest train-station in Europe - it is also called "Top of Europe" This train is the most expensive in Switzerland and going up there makes ONLY sense in perfect weather-conditions !! The trainstation is built inside the mountain and so the trains may run all year long.
From the station you may walk through various tunnels to the points of interest :
1)The Sphinx-viewpoint in a height of 3571 meters. There is a cocktail-lounge and a shop for clocks and a terrace for visitors around all of the building.
    2)The Ice-palace with various ice-sculptures
3)a small museum of the Jungfraubahn
    4)various restaurants, gift-shops and an e-mail-terminal
5)the gate to the glacier, where you may hike to Moenchsjochhuette, go skiing or ride with the sledge-dogs.

    Schilthorn & Piz Gloria
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schilthorn is another must, when visiting Interlaken. Schilthorn is also called Piz Gloria since the James-Bond-movie "On her Majesty's Secret Service" was made there in 1968 and still today plenty of tourists mainly go up there in order to see the place where the movie was made. With a hight of 2970 meters Schilthorn is one of the most famous mountains of Switzerland and it offers a perfect 360 degree-panorama including Eiger, Moench, Jungfrau,Mont Blanc, the Lake Thun, Schyniggeplatte, the mountains around Bern and Fribourg and plenty of others.
In the souvenir-shop on ground-floor (USA:1st floor) you even have a section in the self-service-bar, decorated in 007-style , and of course the shops offer a wide range of 007-souvenirs !!
On 2nd floor you will find a revolving restaurant and there is a large platform behind the restaurant-building as well - the perfect place for your pictures !!
From that platform / terrace you may step down the mountain and walk down to Muerren, BUT it is ONLY possible and advisable for experienced and well-equipped hikers (or Paragliders, as you may see in my sporting-tips) !!
More about prices, timetables etc. - take a look at my transportation-tips !
