The Truemmelbach-falls are certainly the major attraction of Lauterbrunnen and you may find them at the south-end of the small village. These waterfalls are quite unique and also listed as a UNESCO-World-heritage: You may take an elevator up the mountain and may see 10 glacier-waterfalls INSIDE the mountain - a long path will lead you to the most spectacular places.
These waterfalls alone are draining the Eiger, Moench & Jungfrau-glaciers at this side of the mountains - 20.000 litres of water per second will flow through these cascades, everything is wet and hazy inside the mountain, but not at all slippery, all of the tunnels are lighted well, and you might need about 1 hour to see and enjoy everything !
The entrance-fee for the Trümmelbach-falls is 10 Sfr. and includes the ride on the lift, that takes you up the mountain, BUT you still have to step up many steps in order to get to the highest point. Make sure you step down all the way to the entrance-gate, otherwise you will miss some of the best waterfalls !!
Sorry, this place is NOT accessible for handicapped tourists !!
The lift just takes you to a higher place, where you may see the falls ONLY, when you are able to climb up hundreds of additional steps !!
The Truemmelbach-Falls are open April - November
    daily between 09.00a.m. and 05.00p.m.
    in July & August : 08.00a.m. - 06.00p.m. !!
The car-parking there is free of charge !!

Gimmelwald - far away & high up in the mountains
  • Tip Rating:
  • Gimmelwald seems to be mentioned and recommended in various guidebooks and in fact it is a lovely, remote village, where time seems to have stood still since hundreds of years....
Gimmelwald is a great place for a daytrip,
BUT choosing a hotel there in order to explore the Jungfrau-region
    DOES NOT MAKE SENSE !!
    A simple excample :
You like to go the Kleine Scheidegg & Jungfrau from there :
The cablecar is leaving Gimmelwald every half hour to Stechelberg, the ride takes just 5 minutes, but in Stechelberg the bus to Lauterbrunnen will leave mostly only once every hour.First cable-car is around 06.15a.m., the last one is 11.10p.m.
At places like Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Stechelberg etc. you may still take a taxi afterwards, BUT for Gimmelwald there is NO road to !!

  • Directions: Gimmelwald is at the very end of the valley, high above Stechelberg - the only way to get there is by cable-car or hiking !! There is NO public road to Gimmelwald !!

    Lauterbrunnen to Wengen Hike

For a tough but scenic one hour hike, cross the river and follow the yellow signs indicating the direction of the trailhead. The path will take you on a zigzagging ascent through thick pine forests and over trickling waterfalls. When the trees part, look out over Lauterbrunnen Valley for a wonderful view of the small town and its sparkling Staubach Falls below. A rest bench roughly marking the half way point of the trail is provided for the occasional water break and photo snap. Continuing up the ridge, the path grows steeper before opening into the idyllic resort town of Wengen.

    Grutschalp to Murren Hike
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wake early and take the funicular (adjacent to the Lauterbrunnen TI) to the tiny station in Grutschalp 2000 ft. higher in elevation. At the station, marvel at the towering peaks of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau, then follow the yellow signs indicating the trail to Murren. The 1 1/2 hour hike is scenic, passing over waterfalls (including Staubbach Falls) and quiet meadows. Listen for clanking cowbells echoing over the valley. After Winteregg, the path gradually ascends, but remains an easy walk all the way to beautiful Murren, where you can take a train back to Grutschalp or continue on to picturesque Gimmelwald.

    Schilthorn / Piz Gloria
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schilthorn with a hight of 2970 meters is one of the most famous mountains of Switzerland and it offers a perfect 360 degree-panorama including Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau,Mont Blanc, the Lake Thun, Schyniggeplatte, the mountains around Bern and Fribourg and plenty of others. Piz Gloria is the name that the Schilthorn got 1968 in the James-Bond-movie "On her Majesty's Secret Service" and still today plenty of tourists mainly go up there in order to see the place where the movie was made.
In the souvenir-shop on ground-floor (USA:1st floor) you even have a section in the self-service-bar, decorated in 007-style , and of course the shops offer a wide range of 007-souvenirs !!
On 2nd floor you will find a revolving restaurant and there is a large platform behind the restaurant-building as well - the perfect place for your pictures !!
From that platform / terrace you may step down the mountain and walk down to Mürren, BUT it is ONLY possible and advisable for experienced and well-equipped hikers (or Paragliders, as you may see in my sporting-tips) !!
More about prices, timetables etc. - take a look at my transportation-tips !

    Staubbach Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • When the thick forest clears as your train arrives in beautiful Lauterbrunnen, look out across the town at the incredible Staubbach Falls. Cascading over the ridge 300m up, this waterfall is arguably the most stunning in Lauterbrunnen Valley. At night, Staubbach Falls is illuminated, making it appear even more incredible.

Staubachfall is the name of the giant waterfall that you may see from the centre of Lauterbrunnen, where the water falls down more than 300 meters - it is even illuminated at night.
You may see this waterfall best, when you get down the cable-car from Mürren (my 1st pic) or from the train to Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg (my 2nd pic)
Next to the waterfalls is a large parking ( and of course you have to pay there !) and you may walk there free of charge, BUT the Staubachfalls certainly look best from a big distance !!

Mürren is a famous village about 25km south of Interlaken, high above the village of Lauterbrunnen in a hight of 1650 meters. There is NO public road up the mountains there, and ONLY local people may use their cars in Mürren. That fact makes the village of Mürren even more interesting and a perfect place for a quiet vacation and great area to go skiing or hiking. When you go up from Lauterbrunnen by cablecar and train you will realize that all goods have to be taken up by these means of transportation - a fact that is responsible for extra-high prices in Mürren !!
More infos and pics about how to get to Mürren - please take a look at my transportation-tip !!

  • Directions: The total ride from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp and from Grütschalp to Mürren takes about 35 minutes and it allows even a short photostop at the platform on Grütschalp !

    Wengen - high above Lauterbrunnen
  • Tip Rating:
  • Wengen is (besides Mürren) the 2nd of the big car-free-villages of the area around Interlaken. Wengen is situated at the sunny mountain-terrace several hundred meters above Lauterbrunnen, and the cog-railway needs about 15 minutes to get there through several tunnels and a steep & winding track.
Wengen is a lot bigger than Lauterbrunnen and Mürren, and it also has plenty of large hotels. The best about Wengen is the closer view of Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau.
About 300 meters from the train-station you may take the cablecar to Männlichen - from there you may hike to Kleine Scheidegg and even to Grindelwald (a full-day-tour).
Wengen and the Männlicher are also well known by the famous "Lauberhorn-race"

Winteregg is also great in summer !!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Winteregg is a train-station , about half-way between Grütschalp and Mürren and it makes a perfect place for a hike, because all of the area is almost flat and you always see the famous mountains : Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau from a short distance. In Winteregg you will also find a good restaurant with a great panorama-terrace !!

  • Directions: In order to get to Winteregg, you simply take the cablecar from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp. There you change to the train to Mürren, or start hiking. Winteregg is about 50 minutes to walk from Grütschalp.
