Lauterbrunnen Things to Do

  • Staubbach Falls

A short walk from Lauterbrunnen is Staubbach Falls. This stark waterfall is easily visible from the train station. Walk down the path for a closer look, but don't get too close. A falling rock in the wrong place can ruin your whole day.

  • ROAD TO LAUTERBRUNNEN

This would have to be one of the prettiest drives ever!Lucky me, I was the Passenger in the Car, although we did pull up several times for photo's! I had to take one of the Swiss Cow's, munching away in the colourful field's in the month of June. And then, all the Waterfall's, not just the main ones, but the gorgeous smaller one's plummeting over...

In English, this is a Gorge, and an impressive one at that!It is located about 1km from Meiringen, so you can walk to there from the Town.We drove the 40kms from Lauterbrunnen as we were doing many sight's on the one day. No worries with car parking, there was plenty of spaces, and it was FREE.There are some legend's about the Gorge, the one I...

  • LAKE BRIENZ

This is another one of the beautiful Swiss lakes!Located only a short distance from Lauterbrunnen, we decided to do a drive alongside the Lake. Their were a few Yacht's out on the nice Blue, calm and peaceful Lake. Mountain view's were fantastic again!Brienz and Interlaken would be the two biggest lakeside Town's, with other little ones scattered...

  • INSIDE AARESCHULCHT

Once I had paid my admission fee, I eagerly headed along the track towards the Gorge. I was given a map which had information on the main attraction's, and there was a signpost at the beginning of the trail. It was an interesting walk, some of it was through a big Cavern which dated to WWII. Parts of the Gorge were very narrow, then later, it...

  • STAUBBACH FALLS

We saw the Staubbach Falls as we drove into Lauterbrunnen. Wow! They were pretty good! The falls are 297 metres high, and had quite a good flow going over them. They can be seen from Trummelbach Falls and Wengen. We only viewed from a distance, but you can get closer to them by going to the trail head which is beside a Barn close to Lauterbrunnen,...

Lauterbrunnen Restaurants

  • Meal with a view!

It was Lunch time and we wanted to wait and see if the fog cleared a bit. What to do, but head into the Gift shop, then the World's highest revolving Restaurant to see what that was like.To be truthful, we thought it would be terribly expensive, after all, it was a revolving Restaurant, on a Mountain which was very popular with Tourist's.We had a...

We had half board during our 4 night stay at the Silberhorn Hotel during September 2010.The main restaurant was excellent with soup and salads included each evening from the buffet. This restaurant was part of my hotel and seemed to be quite popular not only with the hotel guests but with the locals and visitors as well. Lovely outdoor beer garden was always well patronised as was the very nicely appointed indoor restaurant. Lauterbrunnen Nightlife

  • not much variety

You will not find too many nightclubs or hot bars in Lauterbrunnen. Best to pick a restaurant near your hotel, have a quiet meal, and then head off home to bed. Apres ski is best done up in Wengen or Murren. There is one disco in Lauterbrunnen, but it is lame on most nights, and even on Saturdays rarely gets going, unless you bring your own group...

Lauterbrunnen Transportation

  • Trummelbach to Lauterbrunnen

From Lauterbrunnen, I walked the couple of miles along the river to the falls at Trummelbach. After walking around the falls (and the many steps involved in this), I opted to take the bus back to Lauterbrunnen.Buses run every hour between Trummelbach and Lauterbrunnen. The bus stop can be found near the large building at the entrance to the path to...

We became very familiar with this train station as our train from Basel stopped here for our connection to Lauterbrunnen which is 20 minutes away.We passed through this station several times on our travels, a day trip to Bern, also to catch our train to Zurich and several other visits to Interlaken. The train station is in the city centre.

Lauterbrunnen Shopping

  • St. Bernard Dogs & 007

Located in Piz Gloria, is the Souvenir shop.I guess this one is a little different, as "Bond" gear is for sale, and there is all sorts to choose from. Also, if you arrive and are freezing cold, then there are Jacket's and warm clothes you can buy! As you most probably guessed, I liked all the St. Bernard soft toys for sale, a nice reminder of...

  • Cheese to die for

I could kick myself for not taking more notice of some of the little shops in Lauterbrunnen. I guess I was too busy deciding what to buy to think of taking a picture or remembering the name of the shop. The beautiful thing about Lauterbrunnen in this instance, however, is that the shopping strip is very tiny, so this wonderful "cheesery" will be...

  • Church Bells

Church bells were used for many things in the past - to announce the time, call people to action, etc. I loved hearing the church bells in Lauterbrunnen but one day when we were there they played for about 20 minutes instead of the normal short time - I loved it but my friend had more sensitive hearing than I and she was covering her ears. Lauterbrunnen Warnings and Dangers

  • SLIPPERY SURFACE

When on the viewing platform at Schilthorn, be very careful when you walk if there is Snow on the surface. With people walking on the snow, it had become slushy and slippery, and I found it quite easy to get a wobble up, but didn't fall.As you can see in the photo, there was some cleared area, but not all, so for view's on the other side, you had...

  • LACK OF OXYGEN

This something you need to be aware of when visiting Schilthorn, or any other Mountain.I am asthmatic, so I made sure I had my "puffer" with me, and that I was ready for the "thin" air.Unfortunately, the Woman infront of us, walked out onto the viewing platform and within a few minutes crashed to the floor. It was frightening to say the least! She...

We visited the Top Of Europe late summer and experienced plenty of fresh snow and cold wind.We walked on the snow for 15 minutes or more, I had a jacket and gloves which gave me good protection for 10 minutes before it was necessary to escape back inside. With proper ski clothing you would have no worry. In the area around Lauterbrunnen good shoes are a MUST !! Lauterbrunnen is in a hight of more than 800 meters and when-ever you take a hike, you never know what kind of surface you will have to step through : slippery, wet rocks or mud and high grass, cow-pats etc...Never go without a good weather-gear - an umbrella is certainly NOT enough in the...

  • packing light is sound advice

Packing light is not just sound advice, it is essential for group dynamics. I ski tour with special forces soldiers, who are big, and strong, and I have seen them beaten by the size of their packs. For one, you are up at 3000 meters and higher. You are ski touring the whole day. On a hot day, the snow sticks to your skins on your skis and every...

Isenfluh is a little Mountain Village on the way to Lauterbrunnen. We decided to head up here for our morning tea. • Horse & Carriage Ride - Interlaken

Certainly a tourist thing, I doubt if you would ever see the locals taking a ride. It quickly grabbed our attention as we left the Interlaken train station on returning from our day in Bern.No idea what they charge and I guess waiting time would be short as there were several carraiages operating.A great photo opportunity.
