Favorite thing: If using the transport for a few days in the Alpen Region then get a 3 day "Mobil Pass" which gives unlimited access to all the cable-cars, post buses, Reichenbach funicular. For the other 4 days 50% reduction is available. At 95 SFr (price in 2002) this is good value as the trip to Planplatten and return from Meiringen costs 39 SFr alone.

Fondest memory: My fondest memory of this area was taking the cable-car from Hasliberg (just above Meiringen) to Planplatten (2245m) - the Alpen tower with fellow VT'er Rebibi (Elisabeth). From here we did a nice hike across to Kasserstatt (1840m) on the "High Trail" and down to Bidmi (1423m) where we caught the cable-car back down to Hasliberg-Reuti (1061m). Only about 2.5 hrs of walking but we also enjoyed 2 cake stops en route!!
This pic show one such stop for a meringue at the apline hut ogf Haaggen (2010m). I'm glad it arrived with 2 spoons so Elisabeth could help me out ....it was huge and very creamy.

Fondest memory: Take the post bus from Meiringen climbing on spectacular twisting roads to 2000m eventually arriving at the Grosse Scheidegg right into the heart of the mountains with the 12,000' peak of the Wetterhorn dominating and the Eiger north-face in front. There are also spectacular views of the Rosenlaui Glacier. A visit to the Reichenbach Falls can be incorporated into this trip too.

Favorite thing: Here's a closer view of the Wetterhorn and the glaciers. Beautiful isn't it!

Favorite thing: From Hasliberg Reuti you get a different aspect of the Wetterhorn - so different from the angle I've usually seen from Grindelwald.
This view was just a few steps from my idyllic apartment.

Meiringen the starting point for many trips

The old town in Meiringen is really just one street, pretty close to the church. You may still see a few old houses, in summertime decorated with many geraniums
