the village of Meiringen
  • Tip Rating:
  • The village of Meiringen has still plenty of old wooden houses and so it makes sense to take a little walk. Next to the church you will see some of the most beautiful houses with lovely balconies, full of flowers. Meiringen is not full of tourists like Brienz, Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen, you will rather see hiking-tourists there or skiers in wintertime. Do not expect a fancy nightlife, but at least they have a cinema ! (in the street that leads from the station to the big church.

This is a must for all fans of Sherlock Holmes : In der very centre of Meiringen you may see the world's first authentic replica of the living-room of Sherlock Holmes in Bakerstreet 221b. This replica was made according to the exlanations, given in the books and it includes all the small details beeing mentioned there. This room is shown in a small museum that includes plenty of other interesting Holmes-souvenirs, letters that were sent from all over the world to "Sherlock Holmes, Bakerstreet, London" etc.etc.etc.
You really might get the feeling, Holmes was a real person, how else could they show his private things there...
The Sherlock Holmes Museum is open

    The monument for Sherlok Holmes
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sherlok Holmes did never live in reality, BUT in Meiringen you may see the place, where he died and you may see his monument at the main-square of Meiringen, that is also called Conan-Doyle-Place. The monument was made by John Doubleday in 1988 and at many places on the monument you may find engravings and marks, giving 60 hints, that may help you to solve 60 Sherlock-Holmes-cases...
It is ment for the members of the more than 200 Sherlock-Holmes-societies, who meet quite often in Meiringen - you may see pics of them at Reichenbachfall and other places.

    Aareschlucht
  • Tip Rating:
  • Aareschlucht is a gorge, where the river Aare flows through a rather narrow valley - at first the rocks on both sides of the gorge are in a distance of 200 meters and at the end you may touch the rocks on both sides at the same time. 1400 meters of artificial paths, tunnels and bridges are leading you through the gorge. In my personal opinion Aareschlucht is somehow over-rated and only recommendable, when you have not seen similar places like Truemmelbach in Lauterbrunnen first.
From Meiringen you may take the train to Aareschlucht West and walk down the gorge, or you may park your car at the Aareschlucht-Westeingang, walk up the valley - and start with the most spectacular part and end finally at the east-entrance, where you may just walk back again.
    Aareschlucht is open April-November 1st
    In July&August there will be light-effects each Wed&Fri 09.00-11.00p.m.!
2/3 of the path, beginning at the West-gate - are adapted for wheelchairs
Parking for guests is free of charge at the West-gate
    There is a restaurant, a self-service and a kiosk there !

the church & campanile of Meiringen
  • Tip Rating:
  • The church of Meiringen was the very first church in the valley - the big church that you may see today dates back to 1684 but underneath it's wooden floor you will find remains of the very first church that was built at this place. Outside of the church you may enter the vaults under the church - free of charge and without restrictions during the day. Automatic lights will turn on, when you enter !
The campanile / belltower was built seperately - quite unusual for a church in Switzerland !

next to the campanile in Meiringen you may see the tiny chapel of 1486 - it was first used as a bone-house and includes a small chapel on 1st floor.
take a look inside, it looks really nice and is open for visitors without restrictions during the day. Something special there is the old harmonium and the great frescos around the windows - see my pictures !

The Sherlock-Holmes-Museum is a lot more than just the living-room of the famous dedective. Unfortunately you may not enter that living-room , but see it only through a glass-wall. Everything ther is arranged exactely like described in the book " Study in Scarlet" and it even includes the precious Stradivari, that Holmes bought for 45 Shillings at a flea-market in London... You may see his famous cap there, the medall that Dr.Watson got, because he participated in the 2nd war in Afgahanistan, a lot of letters that had been sent from people all over the world to Bakerstreet 221b.
You may also see exhibits about Conan Doyle, a doctor who had to give up his profession for health-reasons and started to write about Sherlock Holmes in order to survive.
Meiringen was his favorite place to go on vacation in Switzerland.

    the English chapel of Meiringen
  • Tip Rating:
  • Directely at Conan-Doyle-Square you may see the tiny English chapel. The church itself is not very special from inside, except for the Sherlock-Holmes-Museum in its cellar and a carved trunk in front of it, showing "Triichlen" - a local custom taking place each year between december 26th and end of the year, it is a parade of people with strange costumes and masks, accompanied with music and dancers.

Reichenbachfall is the big waterfall opposite of Meiringen, about 2 km to the south from the Sherlok-Holmes-museum. Conan Doyle - the author of Sherlok Holmes - was a regular guest in Meiringen and he was so very much impressed of the scenery of Reichenbachfall, that he thought, this would be the perfect place to die for his famous dedective. When you get out of the funicular you may see a yellow star at the other side of the waterfall and this indicates the place, where Sherlok Holmes had a fight with his arch-enemy Prof. Moriarty and both of them finally fell down and died.
Reichenbachfall is a perfect place to start hikes to Rosenlaui, Grosse Scheidegg and other scenic places.
