For those of you feeling really lazy, having caught the chairlift up and not wanting to hike here, then simply sit at one of the restaurants with a drink and enjoy the sparkliing blue lake and the mountain scenery around. The restaurant is also a hotel - a few rooms are available - 9 doubles and 40 spaces in a dormitory. Truly a wonderful place to...more
At long last summer of 2008 and we had one last day to tackle the Heuberg Rundweg and we made it! The hike involves a loop walk from the top station of the Oeschinensee chairlift to Oberbärgli, down to Unterbärgli, which is quite steep and has rock steps with hand holds to help you. The walk from here down to the Oeschinensee, is much easier and...more
On the eastern side of Kandersteg village a lovely old fashioned chairlift (oh how I wish there was more of these left) takes you up the easy way to the beautiful Oeschinensee above Kandersteg. Enjoy wonderful views of the valley as you glide effortlessly up. Each time on two previous day trips I have taken this chairlift. This visit I didn't - I...more
If you only have time for a short hike then there are trails just above the lakes edge in the trees. Lovely glimpses of the blue water and look out for the sculptures too. Seems to b a popular theme at the moment to have sculpture trails. The ones here were fairly new - indeed we saw some of the woodcarvers/artists at work on them.more
You can partially walk around the water's edge - it can be a bit rocky in places so wear suitable footwear. You will be rewarded with a surprise view of a waterfall - its not always visible as you view the lake from the restaurants. Lovely spot to cool down in in the summer heat too :-))more
Not into hiking but want to cool off in the lake - well jump in but don't be surprised if the water is cold!! I didn't brave it but some hardy sousl did - i was just happy to watch their antics. Pedaloes can be hired but I seem to remember they were several swiss francs for only a short time.more
Now the walk begins. The paths are well-marked, but do pay attention - lots of other paths cross over and lead off of this one. The trail is mostly meadow, some woods, so if it is sunny, wear a hat and sunblock. The walk from the chairlift to the lake is only about 20 minutes.more
A horse and carriage made the trip back and forth, from the chairlift to the restaurant/hotel by the lake. Never saw anyone on it. Good reason too---too expensive and it's only a 20 minute walk on fairly flat ground!
Unique Suggestions: I guess I would like to use the horse and carriage if I couldn't walk well, or if I had a screaming, don't wanna walk toddler in tow...
Fun Alternatives: Walk, like everyone else!
Near the end you go through these plastic orange flag strips. Then you are at the bottom of the track. There is a wooden platform. I thought this is where you got off and did so. My daughter than followed suit, but said, "Mom, I don't think this is the end."It turns out, she was right. You are supposed to stay on the tobaggan as it goes up another...more
We all thought the ride would be a one minute wonder. We were pleasantly surprised by the length of this track. The section you see in the foreground of the picture is the part where you are pulled to the top. This was the worst part of the ride. I felt like I was going to slide off the back of the tobaggan the whole time! It is hard to keep your...more
This is really fun! The ride says, "Choose a fast or slower descent", but as a certified scaredy cat, I can assure you even fast isn't too fast. If you want to go fast, make sure you push the bar forward and HOLD it there, otherwise you will go slow. Most important tip! Make the larger people go first! I got on a tobaggan, followed by my daughter,...more
There are paths all around the lake and some long hikes that begin at the lake. We chose a wooded path that circled the lake to the left (as you arrive). Good choice. This was the path that led us to the cows, fisherman, and then eventually this waterfall. You cannot see this waterfall when you arrive at the lake. It came to us as a surprise, as...more
This was our first excursion of our trip and we were awed by the beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains. We went up early, getting to the chairlift at the bottom at about 8:30 in the morning. We were the only ones there. When we got to the lake, it was us, less than a handful of other sight-seer's and another handful of fishermen. Very...more
