Schloss Schadau is just about 2 km east of the city of Thun and you will pass by it, when arriving by one of the cruise-ships of ThunerSee. Schloss Schadau is dating back to the middle of the 19th century and it was built for a rich banker from Neuchatel. Nowadays you may see inside that palace the "Museum of Gastronomy" with various fancy cork-screws, precious china, cooking-books and menus and in another part of the palace you may see the largest painting in Switzerland : It was made by Marquard Wocher in 1814 and shows the city of Thun in a size of 39x7,5 meters !!
Inside that palace you will also be able to dine in a speciality-restaurant named "Arts Restaurant"
    The gastronomy-museum is open Tue-Thu 02.00-05.00p.m.
The "Arts restaurant" is open daily except mondays
    for reservations call: 03 32 22 25 00
_____________________________<br /> When you walk from the Hauptbahnhof to Schloss Schadau you will pass by that lovely church that you may see in my last 2 pictures.

Covered bridges & the river Aare

There are several covered bridges in Thun ( similar to those in Luzern), but unfortunately they are not open to the public ! The river Aare is flowing through the centre of the city of Thun and there is an island in the middle, totally surrounded by 2 different arms of that river. Several locks with covered bridges will regulate the speed and the level of the water and walking along the river will take you to the most scenic places of the city of Thun, so I may highly recommend it !

  • Directions: The river Aare originates in the east of Meiringen, it will flow through Brienzersee, Interlaken and ThunerSee and then through Thun and forward towards Bern....

    Stadtkirche of Thun
    by globetrott, 4 more photos
Stadtkirche may be seen from almost any place of the city, close to the castle of Thun and its tower dates back to the year 1330. Right under the tower there is an open entrance-hall with frescos dating back to the year 1430 - see my 3rd picture !
There used to be an old church as well, that dated back to the 10th century, but it was replaced by a protestant church in 1738 by Paulus Nader.
The baroque interior of the church that you may see nowadays is not very special except a few smaller details like the lovely door-handle, that you may see at my last picture.
You may enter the church freely and without restrictions during the day !

    Zunfthaus zu Metzgern in Thun
    by globetrott, 4 more photos
Zunfthaus zu Metzgern dates back to the year 1361, when the trading-unions of the butchers were given a piece of land next to the town-square by the city of Thun. This place was ment in order to build a house for their guild and so you may still see the lion with the butcher-ax made by Christian Reist in 1768 and some old inscriptions at the facade of this building, that is just a restaurant today. On 1st floor you may still see the former guild-hall and the safe in the wall of that hall.
Most of the old "Zunfthouses" in Switzerland are still great restaurants today and a perfect place to taste local specialities !

Berntorscheune dates back to the year 1655, and it was built for Venner Jakob Rubin by the carpenter Hans Eimann. Scheune is a barn for a farmer and still today this building is obviously used to store antiques by the people who own the Kunterbunt-Laden (this & that). This wonderful barn is well maintained and beautifully decorated with flowers at the balcony, the roof reminds me a lot of the ones you may see in Black Forrest / Schwarzwald.
    Kunterbunt-Laden is open :
    Mondays 01.30 p.m. - 06.30.p.m.
    Tuesday - friday : 10.00a.m.-12.00 + 01.30 - 06.30p.m.
    Saturday 09.00a.m. - 04.00p.m.

Schloss Thun / the castle of Thun dates back to the year 1190 and it was built by Herzog Berchtold V. von Zaehringen. In the year 1384 the city and the castle of Thun became a posession of the city of Bern and the seat of the Schultheiss ( similar to a judge & lord-mayor). Nowadays the castle is still in posession of the Kanton Bern and inside the large castle-tower there is a museum with a large collection of historic exhibits.
You may take a walk through the castle and most of its courts freely and without restrictions during the day
The Schlossmuseum in Thun is open
    daily between 10.00a.m. and 05.00p.m.

Obere Hauptgasse is the main shoppingstreet of Thun and it will take you directely to the Rathausplatz. It is really interesting to see this special architecture of these old swiss houses, like on my 2nd picture. When you enlarge it ayou will see how wide the roof is built forward the building, that is quite unique in Switzerland, mnaybe for the protection against the snow or what-ever.

    Kirchentreppe & the paintings
    by Roman Tschabold

Kirchentreppe is the fastest way to get from Hauptgasse to the church and to the castle of Thun. Besides these steps there are various small paths that are rather a labyrinth than following a logical system.
These covered stairs also make a lot of sense in the rain or a strong winter with a lot of ice and snow. While that covered stairs datze back to the year 1818 and the round pavillon on top to 1820, the modern painting by Roman Tschabold dates back to 1959 and reminds me a bit of Picasso.

Rathaus / The townhall of Thun dates back to the year 1500 and the tower at the right of the building was added in 1585 for the archieves. The facade that you may see today was made in 1685 with 2 lions holding the coat of arms of Thun.
On 1st floor there is a large hall with a wooden ceiling and doors dating back to 1762.
At the street-level you have that covered market-hall that you may see at my 2nd picture.

The medieval townwall of Thun dates back to the year 1200 and it may still be seen at many places in the city of Thun and at many places it was integrated into the private buildings, used as a backwall for a building and some of its towers are used for private appartments nowadays.
Chutziturm - to be seen on my 2nd and 4th picture - is a good excample for such a modernized tower, it is used by the men's-chorus of Thun and you may see the tower from its original , old side on my 2nd picture, on my 4th picture you may see its backside with a modern house built inside the tower-walls.
