Zunfthaus zu Metzgern dates back to the year 1361, when the trading-unions of the butchers were given a piece of land next to the town-square by the city of Thun. This place was ment in order to build a house for their guild and so you may still see the lion with the butcher-ax made by Christian Reist in 1768 and some old inscriptions at the facade of this building, that is just a restaurant today. On 1st floor you may still see the former guild-hall and the safe in the wall of that hall.
Most of the old "Zunfthouses" in Switzerland are still great restaurants today and a perfect place to taste local specialities !

Address: CH-3600 Thun - Rathausplatz
Schloss Schadau is just about 2 km east of the city of Thun and you will pass by it, when arriving by one of the cruise-ships of ThunerSee. Schloss Schadau is dating back to the middle of the 19th century and it was built for a rich banker from Neuchatel. Nowadays you may see inside that palace the "Museum of Gastronomy" with various fancy cork-screws, precious china, cooking-books and menus and in another part of the palace you may see the largest painting in Switzerland : It was made by Marquard Wocher in 1814 and shows the city of Thun in a size of 39x7,5 meters !!
Inside that palace you will also be able to dine in a speciality-restaurant named "Arts Restaurant"
The gastronomy-museum is open Tue-Thu 02.00-05.00p.m.
The "Arts restaurant" is open daily except mondays
for reservations call: 03 32 22 25 00

When you walk from the Hauptbahnhof to Schloss Schadau you will pass by that lovely church that you may see in my last 2 pictures.

Schloss Thun / the castle of Thun dates back to the year 1190 and it was built by Herzog Berchtold V. von Zaehringen. In the year 1384 the city and the castle of Thun became a posession of the city of Bern and the seat of the Schultheiss ( similar to a judge & lord-mayor). Nowadays the castle is still in posession of the Kanton Bern and inside the large castle-tower there is a museum with a large collection of historic exhibits.
You may take a walk through the castle and most of its courts freely and without restrictions during the day
The Schlossmuseum in Thun is open
daily between 10.00a.m. and 05.00p.m.

Berntorscheune dates back to the year 1655, and it was built for Venner Jakob Rubin by the carpenter Hans Eimann. Scheune is a barn for a farmer and still today this building is obviously used to store antiques by the people who own the Kunterbunt-Laden (this & that). This wonderful barn is well maintained and beautifully decorated with flowers at the balcony, the roof reminds me a lot of the ones you may see in Black Forrest / Schwarzwald.
Kunterbunt-Laden is open :
Mondays 01.30 p.m. - 06.30.p.m.
Tuesday - friday : 10.00a.m.-12.00 + 01.30 - 06.30p.m.
Saturday 09.00a.m. - 04.00p.m.

There are two covered bridges in Thun:
Obere Schleuse was built in 1724 as a barrage for the regulation of the level of the lake. This bridge covers the Aeussere Aare, the other bridge covers the Innere Aare and fulfills the same function at the same time.
From both bridges you have great views. And you will also be impressed by the power of the streaming water.

The Obere Hauptgasse street stretches from Rathausplatz eastwards. Very unusual are the trottoirs: On street level you find nice shops and on the roof of those shops you can walk - and find more shops! Really unique.

The main square is surrounded by beautiful Baroque buildings (partly) with arcades.
The Town hall was built in Baroque style, renovated in 1762 in Rokoko style inside (magnificent interior!) and has a medieval tower from 1500.
Zunfthaus zu Metzgern is easily to recognise by the Lion with the axe. It was built 1765-70.
Platzschulhaus (built 1792-97) was used as a garnison when the French troops had occupied Switzerland 1797-1803. Afterwards it became a school, since 1930 it is home of the city police.
Another impressive building is Hotel Krone with its picturesque tower.

On the northern and western edge of the castle hill you can find well preserved remains of the former medieval fortifications.
The Burgi Gate near the church, the Chutzi-, Venner-Zyro- and Schwäbi Towers are still connected by the medieval wall. Just stroll along and enjoy!
