The funicular to Chateau Gutsch is the only part of the former luxury hotel that is still operated. Enter the wagon at the station in the city or at the chateau, throw in some coins - it was a rather small amount - and then you might have to wait a few minutes. In my case the funicular started to go upwards 5 minutes after I have entered the wagon. We had been a total of 4 passengers and not a single person at the oncoming wagon. Like most of the funiculars both wagons are fixed at each other by a thick rope and both wagons will move simultaneously - one going up, the other coming down. Leave a Comment Theme: Other

Vierwaldstaetter See / Lake Lucerne is a perfect place to go cruising and you may even find some old steam-ships going around the lake on a regular basis. I took an evening-tour by ship from Luzern to Vitznau and Kuessnacht, unfortunately it became quite dark soon after departure, but it was still a great tour with the town beautifully lighted and the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains in the moonlight. For holders of the Tell-Pass the ships on the lakes of Lucerne are totally free of charge for 2 or 5 days and for the rest of days you pay just 50% . There are also day-tickets available just for the ships ! Leave a Comment

Parking inside the city of Luzern parking of a car is quite tricky, rather expensive and connected with a lot of trouble. The largest carpark of Luzern / Lucerne is certainly next to Verkehrshaus. There are several sections, the closer to the Verkehrhaus you park your car, the more expensive is the parking-fee. In the parking-spaces close to the museum, motorhomes are not allowed to stay over night, a few hundred meters more to walk and the signs are not mentioning motorhomes anymore. This is where I took my parking for 3 days and nights, paying a daily fee of 5 sfr during the day, the parking at night is totally free of charge. One morning I saw a police-car controlling my parking-area, BUT they did not care at all about my motorhome. The bus-system in Luzern / Lucerne is well organized and when you take the seat in the first row, next to the driver, you will even find a local newspaper at your disposal, while you use the bus (see my 3rd picture). I used the large car-park next to Verkehrshaus Luzern. The buses from there were leaving for the city every 10 minutes, the ride to Schwanenplatz was around 15 minutes. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

Lucerne (like all of Switzerland) has excellent rail connections from and to locations throughout the country. The main station (Bahnhof) is located right in the centre of the town on the sountern bank of Lake Lucerne. You can buy you tickets from the ticket office or skip the queue and buy them at the automatic touch screen ticket machines located downstairs (very easy to use). Cash and/or Cards can be used in the machines From Basel you have hourly non-stop trains leaving at 4 minutes past the hour and takes an hour and 10 minutes. 2nd Class One Way is CHF 31 From Zurich you have twice hourly non-stop trains leaving at 4 minutes past and 35 minutes past the hour and takes 45 minutes. 2nd Class One Way is CHF 23 From Interlaken you have hourly non-stop trains leaving at 4 minutes past the hour and takes 2 hours. 2nd Class One Way costs CHF 30 From Geneva you have hourly non-stop trains leaving at 10 minutes past the hour and takes just under 3 hours. 2nd Class One Way costs CHF 70 From Bern you have hourly non-stop trains leaving on the hour and 37 minutes past the hour and takes between an hour or an hour and 30 minutes. 2nd Class One Way costs CHF 31 For more destinations check the Swiss rail website (link below) BTW When I say 4 minutes past the hour I mean 4 minutes past the hour. The Swiss Rail System is unbelievably punctual!

by KennetRose There are fast trains to and from Basel, Zürich and other towns and cities. But really, the very best way to get to Luzern is from Interlaken over the Brünig Pass. This train is a delight - it runs along the flat valley bottom to Meiringen alongside Lake Brienz, then reverses and seems to climb almost vertically up the mountain to the summit of the pass before the descent into Luzern Leave a Comment Theme: Train

the train station by call_me_rhia To find a free car park in Lucerne is very close tomission impossible: parking places are definitely overpriced, at over 40 francs a night (roughly 30 euros). Unless the hotel you're going to stay has parking opportunities, the best bet is to enter the city by train. The train station is really in the centre of town, and a river-crossing away from the old town.
