Stans Things to Do

  • Marmot Park

Marmots are timid but the ones here in residence aren't though they are curious if you are getting closer to their home and they are alert . Mind you, they love being photographed. So you can observe them in their natural environment .

  • Walking and Hiking Trails

The Stanserhorn Mountain offers a variety of marked walking and hiking trails up and down the mountain and shorter mountain trails around the mountain itself. Some of the hikes are challenging and can take anywhere up to 4 to 5 hours while others are designed more for visitors (like me) who just want to have a short walk around the mountain summit...

  • Meadow lands around Stans

One of the most enjoyable parts of my trip to Stans and the Stanserhorn Mountain was walking through the meadowlands on the slopes of the lower mountain. It was my first real taste of quintessential Swiss countryside and I just got a real sense of Switzerland just by walking along the narrow lanes leading up the slopes past traditional farmhouses...

  • Alpine Flowers

As you walk the trails around the summit of the Stanserhorn, keep your eyes peeled for the seasonal Alpine flowers which grow only at high altitudes. I spotted these lovely white and purple fowers along one of the trails. However make sure you don't pick the flowers - thye are protected. Also when going close up to the flowers, be careful where you...

  • Marmot Enclosure

On the walk up to the summit from the Rondorama, I was pleasantly surprised to find this Marmot enclosure on the way. These furry little animals are native to the Alpine regions of Switzerland but there are many species of marmot throughout the world. The ones on Stanserhorn are unsurprisingly called Alpine Marmots and can live at altitudes of...

The Stanserhorn funicular is more than just a way to get up the mountain. It is a historical importance in its own right. The funicular has been travelling up the mountain since 1893 and was constructed by Josef Durrer and Franz Josef Bucher-Durrer. The train doesn't go as far as it used to due to the presence of the modern aeriel cable car (1975)...

In front of the church there is a fountain dedicated to Arnold von Winkelried, which was erected in 1865. The centre of Stans is dominated by the Church of St. Peter and Paul. The church in its present form was built between the year 1641 and 1647 but the beautiful Romanesque Belltower is earlier. The clock has nice coloured frescos around its face. The church was once the only place of worship in the entire Nidwalden Kanton and so was expanded greatly...

I asked for the menu and whenI saw the prices I said, thank you, and left to a supermarket to buy bread and cheese.

Favorite Dish: Everything looked delicious in the menu of that restaurant, but the prices were too high for me.

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Very interesting story:The vintage cable car is now fusioned to modern aerial one technique. In 1893, the railway worked in three segments for technical reasons until 1970. Today, the longest and the lower section(1556 meters) is still in use.
