Living in Schaffhausen, I cannot actually understand all the hype about Rheinfall and especially Stein am Rhein. A visit to Rheinfall is expensive and not that extraordinary as you might expect from the "biggest waterfall of Europe". Stein am Rhein - well, just another "old town" to see...

If you come along Kanton Schaffhausen, you rather go to opposite direction of Stein am Rhein, namely the region of Klettgau. Towns there are called Hallau, Wilchingen, or Neunkirch. What can they offer? Wine tastings of good wines (this area is also called "Blauburgunderland" in depence on the Burgundy, France), horse or carriage rides over the hills and vineyards, wonderful hiking paths (there is a valley called "Wangental", just behind Wilchingen. My wife gave this valley the name "the Hobbit's Shire" respectively "Auenland".

Getting to Hallau and other towns and villages in Klettgau is very easy. There is a frequent train and Bus, that brings you in 15 minutes to all the places. Or rent a bike at Schaffhausen train station. There you can also get a trailer for the kids and lots of hints on tours.

By the way: Did you know, that the origin of Amish people lays in Anabaptist community wich was founded in Schleitheim? Schleitheim is a village, about 15 minutes by bus from Schaffhausen...
