Hot chesnuts are a very popular snack in the winter half year. Young and old like eating them. There are hot chesnut kiosks all over the city (green little houses) where you can buy the goodies which come in a paper bag. If it's cold, they are also good to warm your hands. They grow them in the south of Switzerland in the Ticino. But I think we eat that many, so that we also have to import some from Italy. Current price (2006) for 150 gramms is CHF 4.20. When you peel them always break them apart, so that you can see whether they are ok, because occasionally they are worm ridden which you recognize seeing lots of brown dots in one part. Sometimes you can still eat part of the chesnut. Leave a Comment

This sausage is shorter than a Bratwurst and brownish in colour. It has a specific taste and it can either be eaten cold, boiled or grilled. Of course, the grilled version is the best and in summer when people barbeque in the forests and parks on an open fire, then they cut in both ends about 3 cm deep in a cross and stick the sausage on a self-made spit from a bush or tree and then it gets 8 legs through the heat. allotments by yumyum Allotments are popular with part of the population. Our family also had one when I was a kid. You can rent one on a yearly basis for around 100 Euro. There are lots of rules and regulations and you have to keep it tidy otherwise it will be taken away from you. You can grow all sorts of fruit and veggies and flowers there. It's also popular for barbeques, but you are not allowed to stay overnight! Leave a Comment

10 Swiss Francs banknote by HORSCHECK Although Switzerland is situated in the centre of Europe it is not a member of the European Union nor does it have the Euro as currency. The official currency in Switzerland is the Swiss Franc (CHF). The smaller denomination is called Rappen ( 100 Rappen = 1 CHF). As all countries around Switzerland use the Euro as official currency, many shops and restaurants catering to tourists will accept payment in Euro but probably not at the best rate. You can get your Swiss Francs from many cash points or exchange offices all around the town. Credit cards are widely accepted. Leave a Comment

This weekend event takes place every 3 years on the first July weekend. It starts Friday at 5 pm and finishes on Sunday night. The city center is closed to traffic and public transport. There are always lots of market and mainly food and drink stalls. Also there are open-air stages with concerts and discos. On the lake there are attractions like high divers, acrobatic water skiing. In the sky there are usually several acrobatic air shows. There are several funfair areas with crazy rides or rides for kids and there is also always the biggest ferris wheel in Switzerland. The major highlight is the firework on Saturday evening. Along the lake promenade there are loudspeakers installed in order to listen to the music during the firework. On Saturday it's pop music and on Friday classical music. If the weather permits it, the classical concert is live, they were playing on a large pontoon. If you want a good spot where you can sit down, you need to be there at least 2 hours in advance. The fireworks usually start at 10.30 pm. Leave a Comment

A Spring Festival in Zurich held every year on the third Monday of April unless it clashes with Easter Monday, and be postponed for the following week. This historic spring activity is a reminder of the time when zurich was ruled by the guilds of craftsmen during 1334 to 1798. The celebration begins with a children's parade on Sunday afternoon. In the last few years it is participated of different cultures existing in the region both local and international with their lovely costumes. The following day(Monday) there is an impressive procession of guildsmen marked by finely decorated floats with thousand of flowers and the elegant horsemen. The highlight of the festivities is the burning of the "BOEGG" at exactly 6 pm while the horsemen gallops around the burning object. Boegg is a snowman specially prepared for this very day. It is padded and stuffed with explosives. The shorter time it explodes, the better is the summer.(it is the belief). GOODBYE WINTER!!!! This years burning took only 12 minutes....juhui!!!
