Zürich Central Train Station
Zürich Central Station is the largest railway station in Switzerland and a major traffic hub for international and local trains and city travel (tram). The first central station building was built in 1847, replaced in 1871 by the railway station in neo-renaissance style as we know it now.
In the interior and extensive underground sections of the railway station, many shops compete for customers. In the winter, a Christmas Market can be found in the main hall. At the start of Bahnhofstrasse, a monument to the Swiss railway pioneer Alfred Eschers is located.
I am wondering what is that "Ding" hanging on the ceiling of Zürich's main train station. My curiosity says: it is the new highlight of the "Hall". A high-tech Body of light named "Nova" weighing 3.3 tons, composed of 25,000 light conicals that beams into more than 16 millions schemes of color showing different sequences in three-dimensional display. The project is realized by scientist from ETH Zürich(Engineering School), symbolizing Art, Science and Soceity. According to them, it will offer a moment of relaxation and tranquility to passers by and travelers. Take time and enjoy watching this new spectacular at the hall.
Zürich's Hauptbahnhof (Central Railway Station) is one of the busiest in Europe. It is *the* hub for public transportation in Switzerland. It is also a beautiful building (finished 1871) with a lot of details worth to watch, like the statue of Helvetia above the main entrance.
And it is a large shopping centre, open even on Sundays and holidays. Without a plan I would get lost there. One finds excellent groceries (cheese!), the Sprüngli confiserie, but also clothing stores etc.
While in Zurich you will automatically won't miss this yearly event-the Christmas Fair in the Mainstation and Shopville. A covered Christmas market thus making it unique than the others. At the ground floor is the huge Christmas Tree decorated with Swarovski crystals and & jewelries. It sparkles and glitters all around the Railway city and is the biggest Indoor Christmas Market in Europe.

Shopville, the Underground shopping
This area is not only well appreciated from the locals but also from travellers. Located between the main floor and the undergroundtracks of the city's main station. Groceries, drugstores, chocolate shops, fashion jewelries, flowers, boutiques, perfumes, shoes, stockings, electronics, photos, computer, music, bookstores, papetry, sportshops, beverages or even a fitness center, dental clinic, orthopedy and a large telephone & internet corner and bancomats. Shop and have drinks, a quickie lunch or have some goodies from take away stands.
Zurich's main Train Station
The station is one of the departure points for excursions all over Switzerland and to the neighboring European countries and intercontinental journeys. A baroque style of building facing to the city's famous and main street Bahnhofstrasse. At the ground level, there are various events and activities the whole year round. It may be a weekly market, cinema, concerts or sport events. These all take place here. There's no boring waitings for the train. In the hall you'll find a lot of cosy bars, imbiss and cafes or just sit down on one of the benches and have a look overhead. You may see some old and modern Arts and Architecture or maybe a hovering Angel keeping watch over the travellers. You may have also your last shopping before continuing your journey. Swiss souvenirs to chocolates or if one might need some medics so badly, a Pharmacy and a Drugstore a Medical Clinic(Permanence) for emergency are right there for you.
The main station is the first thing most visitors see of Zurich. It is not just a railway station, there is also a shopping centre inside and a lot of events in the main hall. For example there is a weekly market, a cinema in summer and the chrismas market in Dezember. You can also find a tourist information here.
Bizarre art in train station
Whenever I arrive in a new city I immediately start looking for what will be my first impression of the city. I did not have to leave the station before this bizarre piece of art caught my attention. This was suspended from the ceiling of the station. I love bizarre and unusual street art. This certainly fits the description.
We arrived in Zurich at the main train station. From our hotel in Bern it was only about 2.5 to 3 hours to get to Zurich. We were able to spend the entire day and most of the night and still get back in time to catch the train back to Bern. The station is large and very clean. There is a tourist office in the station where you can find maps and brochures to help you with your visit in Zurich.
For me the main station is the nicest building in Zurich! Great outdoors and indoors! The huge hall in there is tremendous! An angel of Niki de Saint Phalle is hanging in there!
Nice bars and restaurants in there! And the touristinfo is there as well! Here you will find a lot of stuff about Zurich and Switzerland!
