    Swimming in the lake

    Swim here

Go for a swim. There are a number of Lido style places to enjoy bathing in the lake. This one is called Mannendorf and is on the North bank, approx 1/2 hour from Zurich centre. I really liked this place as it has really well manicured grass, paddling pool in shared for young 'uns, ping-pong, beach volleyball, protected area where you can use inflatables and the lake itself with a few diving platforms. One warning, don't bother getting there too early as the staff will not have had the chance to clean the diving areas of the bird poo. Entrance fee here is very reasonable -about 2 GBP.

I much prefer swimming in lakes than the sea, warmer, no current, no seaweed and it tastes better.

Boat cruises on Lake Zurich or Limmat River

Had we stayed in Zurich longer we probably would have gone on one of the boat tours on Lake Zurich as a boat cruise sounded like an excellent way to see the city from the water and also for a nice view of the surrounding mountains and shoreline.

Lake Zurich is quite a bit smaller than Lake Geneva so you can do a tour of the whole lake in about 4 hours round trip. Or there are plenty of shorter cruises that take 1 1/2 hours or a 55 minute cruise along the Limmat River.

See the attached website for more information.

Cruising at the lake is such a pleasant way to relax and enjoy the day. Take the longer trip until Rapperswil. Have a cup of coffee or a glass of wine or any refreshments aboard. Lean on and let yourself be spoiled of the beautiful sights of the surrounding areas.

The beautiful lake begins right in the downtown of Zurich. In summer I would imagine it is a great place to go on a boat, but when I was there in November, nobody was sailing. The snow-capped mountains in the back are also beautiful.

    Wakeboarding

You can do wakeboarding on lake zurich. They provide you with everything - tuition, wetsuit, board etc and it works out at 3 francs a minute for an average 15 minute session. Great fun, though hard to get the hang of. The water in lake zurich is also very warm at around 20 degrees so you don't have to worry about being in it too much :)

Lovely lake surrounded by mountains, it is well worth the trip! There is some bike lanes for part of the trip, especially close to Zurich. If you work hard and get up the mountains, you will be rewarded with lovely views.

Excellent place for an evening walk

I was in Zurich for a business trip and was done with all my meetings around 6 PM. After that I didn't really know what to do, since I was new to the city. So I just went to the city centre and started to walk around the city.

After a few minutes I reached Lake Zurich and enjoyed the beautiful view of the Lake from different sides as I was walking around it. A perfect place to spend your evening, when you are in Zurich.

    The Zurichsee

Switzerland is full of glacial lakes, and Zurich has its very own. There are places to walk along the lake, and this part of the city has a lot of green space to it. There are scheduled boats that can take you to other towns on the lake. The Swiss Pass covers these rides.

    Sailboat crusing leisurely
    4 more images

Taking a boat ride round the Lake is a joy. You can see houses packed on the mountains, swans and ducks wadding playfully, sailboats crusing with the breeze and sea birds swooping into the waters for their prey. As the boat docks at each jetty, you can see children playing at the little parks along the banks. Buy a Zurich card for 15CHF and you can take the boat ride free. You can take all the trams, trains and buses.

Take the time to wander along the lakeside and enjoy the peace and quiet. You can take tram numbers 2 & 4 to Bahnhof Tiefenbrunnen and then take a slow walk back to the city centre. There are lots of photographic opportunities for those that like water and boats.

    Take a boat trip!

You can take a boat trip round the lake from the Quay at the bottom of Bahnhoffstrasse. Locals do use it as a bus almost to certain areas, but you can get a round trip and enjoy the views round the lake quite cheaply. The boat only runs twice a day in winter but it was warm inside! You can buy your ticket on the boat if you wish.

    Lake

The parks and meadows on the lakeside are the best place to relax in Zurich. In summer a lot of people are there for sunbathing, swimming or eating. My favourite places are the Zurichhorn or the meadows in front of the Rentenanstalt. You can just walk around the lake and maybe combine it with a visit to the chinese garden or a boat trip. It is also possible to rent pedalos and in July/August there is an Open air cinema.

    Lake Cruise

by Subria Written Feb 9, 2006

    4.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

When you visit Zurich in summer time you should take a lake cruise. There are departures half-hourly from Buerkliplatz at the end of the Bahnhofstrasse and there are cruises between 1,5 and 5 hours. In addition to the motorboats there are two paddle-steamers, but they are only in service when the weather is nice. If you have a daypass for the public transport you have to buy an additional ticket. There are also boat departures in winter, but only twice a day.

    Zurichsee

Lake Zurich or Zurichsee as spelt in Zurich.
I should imagine in the summer along the promenade next to the lake is beautiful with all the trees in leaf, the sun shining, and the views of the mountains to admire.

However in January it was freezing and misty. But undeterred we had a wonder along.

There are though still short boat trips in the winter leaving daily at 1.05pm and 2.35pm.

When looking at my photograph, just imagine, its a lovely warm sunny day, the sky is blue, the mountains in the distance have white peaks, and you are sitting there having an ice cold drink!! :-) It seems much better then!!!
