The Funicular Rigiblick belongs to the public transportation network of Zurich (ZVV). It leads to the top of the hill Zurichberg from where you can enjoy scenic views of Zurich and the Mount Rigi (1797m). The fully automatic funicular climbs about 94 metres at a distance of almost 400 metres. You can get to the base station of the Funicular Rigiblick by tram No. 9 and 10. The main train station (Hauptbahnhof, HBF) of Zurich is located at the northern end of the busy Bahnhofstrasse, right in the city centre. It is the biggest train station in Switzerland with connections to all major towns in Switzerland. International trains provide services to Germany, Italy, France and Austria. Leave a Comment

I have flown several times to Zurich from Dortmund and Cologne in Germany. Zurich's airport is located about 12 km north of the city centre near the suburb Kloten. It has 3 terminals: A, B and E. If your flight is to terminal E, then you have to use a skymetro train, which links terminal E with the other terminals. Probably the easiest way to get into town is by train. A trip to the main train station takes about 15 minutes and all scheduled trains belong to the public transportation system. Since December 2008 the airport also has a direct tram connection with the city centre. Tram #10 serves a route from the airport via the train station Oerlikon Ost to Zurich's main train station in less than 40 minutes. A normal single ticket for both the train and the tram sets you back 6,20 CHF (2009) and can be bought from machines at the tram stops or the train station. The public transportation network of Zurich (ZVV) is said to be one of the densest in the world. Numerous trams and buses provide daytime services from 5:00 h until 00:30 h. From Friday to Sunday special night services are available. The public transportation also includes several boat, train and cablecar services. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines and ticket offices. Most tickets have to be validated before entering a vehicle. Website ZVV: http://www.zvv.ch/ Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

From May to October free city bikes can be rented from 6 bike stands throughout the city. To get one you have to leave your I.D. card and a deposit of 20 CHF. Then you can head off for the whole day, but have to return your bike at the same bike stand. The project is financed by several sponsors including the local public transport company. The bikes have 24 gears and are of really good quailty In July 2007 we rented two of these bikes from the bike stand in Zurich Oerlikon. Our trip took us along the river Glatt to the quaint village of Oberglatt. For more information about the location and opening times of the bike stands please check out their website. The Swiss railway system is probably the best in the world, at least we in Germany are very envious of some aspects of it. In Germany (and France, for that matter) the emphasis is on prestigious high-speed rail connections between the major cities and airports, and the rest of the system tends to be neglected, with branch lines constantly in danger of being phased out altogether. In Switzerland, though, they pride themselves on having an integrated rail system that functions at all levels, with frequent connections from nearly everywhere to nearly everywhere else. They say that "almost 800 stations have hourly or half-hourly regular-interval (clockface) train services." Leave a Comment

The funicular Polybahn is part of Zurich's public transportation network. It links the tram stop "Central" in the lower part of Zurich with the university and is therefore mainly used by students. The Polybahn was constructed at the end of the 19th century. Complete renovations took place in 1976 and 1996, when it reopened as UBS Polybahn. The track length is 176 m and it takes only about 100 seconds to get from the base to the top station. Leave a Comment

Tram by the Limmat River by Nemorino Zürich has a fine integrated local and regional transportation system, using trains, buses, ships and especially trams (streetcars). You can use all forms of transport with just one ticket. For instance, from any ticket machine you can get a one-day pass for the city of Zürich (ZVV Zone 10) for 7.60 Swiss Francs, which is only about 4.88 Euros. (Valid 24 hours from the time you buy it.) With your normal ZVV transportation ticket you can also use the Polybahn, which is a popular way of getting from city center (from the stop called "Central") to the university. Leave a Comment

One of the Limmat Boats by the main station by Nemorino, 3 more photos Also included in the integrated transportation system are the Limmat Boats, which go along the Limmat River from the main railroad station, and then out a ways onto Lake Zürich. These are very low boats because they have to pass under several low bridges along the Limmat. Leave a Comment
