From Airport to Downtown

You can get to Downtown Zurich by Taxi, Train or Bus.

I would recommend to go there by Train. It's the cheapest and probably fastest way. Go to the Train Station in the lowest floor of the airport.

You can buy your ticket at the vending machines or at the counter. Just get a ticket to Zurich (ZIP Code 8000) for 2 hours (one way) or 24 hours (return), depending on your further plans.

It takes about 10 - 15 minutes to Mainstation (Zürich Hauptbahnhof) and there is a train every few minutes.

Even though Zurich Airport has a very high airport fee, there are a few Low Cost Carriers flying to Zurich:

Easy Jet from London Luton and Gatwick

Germanwings from Cologne

SkyEuorpe from Bratislava, Budapest, Brno and Vienna.

And there are also some cheap airlines with fixed prices for all seats:

Germania Express from Alicante, Athens, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Lisboa, Palma, Saloniki, Vienna

Helvetic Airways from Alicante, Brussels, Malaga, Marseille, Naples, Nice, Palma, Prague, Rome, Valencia, Venice, Vienna.

Zurich airport

I paid full fare this time, it was not a discount airline, so I was disappointed to say the least..

When flying to USA, my flights are 9-14 hours and I can't believe that they charge for meals on a regular flight.

The Polybahn

This little rack railway is build for the lazy students, you could say. It´s leading form the Limmatquai up to the Polyterrassen where the Uniiversity and the ETH are situated, both are well known and famous places to study.

Discover ALL the City!
Tea4Two profile photo

Tea4Two 100 reviews

The city is a massive one way system for cars and it is difficult for a newcomer to navigate. The attractions normally tell you which stop to get off at and all transport is regular and runs like clockwork!

If you purchase a Zurich Card (24h = CHF15.- or 72h = CHF30.- this will enable you to use ALL the city transportation (i.e. train, tram, bus and boat), free entry to 43 museums and a free welcome drink in some restaurants. And if that is not enough you can get a discount on a variety of other things. This is a bargain and one to be taken advantage of.
It can be purchased from the Tourism office in the Main Train Station and a number of other Transport Ticket Booths.

The public transportation in...

The public transportation in Switzerland is very good. The best way to travel to and from Zurich is either by airplane or by train.
If you aren't a millionair you shouldn't try to take a cab, they are VERY expensive!
There is no subway in Zurich but we have buses, trams, trains and ships.
Zurich is a very small town, you can almost walk to every place and it doesn't take you longer than a half an hour... If you want to know more about transportation in Zurich go to www.rail.ch or www.vbz.ch

Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (website: www.zvv.ch; tel: 0848 988 988) runs Zurich's excellent public transport system that consists of buses, trams and S-bahn suburban trains.

Short trips cost SFR 2.10, although a SFR 3.60 one-hour ticket is more useful. A 24-hour ticket, valid on buses, trams and the S-bahn, costs SFR 7.20 for the city centre or SFR 10.80 for the city centre and most suburbs. There is also an off-peak day pass that is good for travel anywhere in the canton of Zürich after 9am. Eurailpass, SwissCard and SwissPass travel passes are valid for travel on the S-bahn network.

Zurich operates a city bike programme where you can borrow a bike to explore the city free of charge.

Trams

Zürich trams are a minor miracle!

Apparently, the city authorities had a referendum on whether to have a metro system, and it was voted down. So they then decided to find out how to persuade people to use the trams. They discovered that people didn't mind a slow journey, but wouldn't use public transport if they had to wait a long time for it - ten minutes at the outside.

So, Zürich trams run every 6 minutes. If you just miss one, you know that another will be along in 6 minutes. Not a bit before, not a bit after, but precisely 6 minutes!

Now, why don't these guys come and sort out London?

.
At 11 km from town, you will find Zürich's gateway to the world - the airport Zürich-Kloten - one of the biggest and most efficient in Europe and, at the same time, one of the safest in the world. The train ride from the airport to the centre of town takes only 10 minutes.
