 | Zürich Warnings or Dangers | Tips 1 - 10 of 40 | | Popular Warnings or Dangers | Other Warnings or Dangers Tips | All Tips (40) Most cities that have an elegant nineteenth-century opera house tend to have some sort of elegant public square in front of it. But not Zürich. Here when you come out of the opera house you immediately step into the middle of an ordinary twenty-first century parking lot. Even people who do not share my aversion to automobiles usually agree that this is inappropriate, and in fact the authorities in Zürich have been talking for years about making changes here. In 1999 they announced an international architects' competition to design a new underground parking garage. In 2001 the Zürich architects Zach + Zünd won the competition. Their plan, which is known as "Opus One", was approved by the citizens of Zürich in a referendum held in May 2003, and since then the project has supposedly been in a phase of planning and determining the costs. The results of this are to be announced at the end of 2005, but no one knows if or when they will actually start building. (People in Zürich like to make jokes about how slow the Bernese are, haha...) Leave a Comment

Try to avoid the Rush Hour (7am - 9am and 5pm - 6pm) at the Mainstation and Bahnhofstrasse. Trains and Streets are packed with Bankers, Students and bunch of other people. Dear Tourists, just try to go there between 9am and 12am or petween 2pm and 5pm. Leave a Comment

Be careful don't drive if the trafficlight is red. There are a lot of automatic red light controls in zurich. A red light fee is 200sfr So stop if the trafficlight goes to yellow and you don't have a problem. Sometimes the red light control also measure the speed. What out also my Warning about Automatic velocimetry. List of red light controls at http://www.radar.ch Leave a Comment

This tip is rather for the government, and as you would see in this picture, they are always very concerned about this danger. For me, I always love to take my destiny in my hand. Drive yourself if you can. Snow always cover the rail tracks. However, there was no recent history of derailment in this region. Leave a Comment

Traditionally all trams and buses of Zurich's public transportation network aren't in service between 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on the 1st of May (Labour Day). Only the urban railway (S-Bahn) can be used. This is to allow the drivers to attend the traditional Labour Day parade. So please keep this info in mind when visiting Zurich around the 1st of May which is often a popular long weekend for city trips. Leave a Comment

Zurich is a safe city, that's out of question. But there are some areas where you have to watch out and be carefull. Langstrasse (Long Street) is probalby the most international street in Zurich and attracts a lot of Tourists. But you also have to watch out as crime is higher in this area. Old Town (Niederdorf) is a great Nightlife Area but people get drunk pretty often and also kinda agressiv sometimes. But don't worry, just enjoy and try to avoid those guys... or have a drink with them. There are some other small spots, which are kinda scary at night, but it shouldn't be a big problem. As with any city you have some odd characters about. The main problem I have come across is pick pockets. They are VERY good and you will not see them take your handbag or probably feel them taking your wallet from your pocket. The other problem are the street beggars. Always be polite when saying "no". They are not violent people - just homeless with maybe some social problems. Treat them with a degree of respect. Leave a Comment

This is not a warning soley for Zurich, but when staying in a hotel anywhere in the world. Whenever we stay in a hotel, after checking into the hotel room my husband always find the fire exits. He always says you need to know 'just in case' because if there was a fire and everywhere was filled with smoke they are not always easy to find then. On our visit to Zurich we were woken at 3.00am to the sound of ringing!!! We then realised that it was indeed a fire alarm, and throwing on our clothes as quick as possible, we carefully opened the bedroom door, thankfully to see no smoke. As we were making our way down the stairway (never use a lift during a fire alarm) we came across some other people who too were on there way downstairs. Thankfully then a manager appeared to tell us that everything was OK, but that the alarm had sounded because someone was smoking in a non smoking room and the smoke detectors had picked it up!!! Dont have a picture to go with the alarm bells, so just added another lovely view of this lovely city. Leave a Comment

I'd like to tell my story about the supposedly "free bike service". I was in Zurich with a couple of friends in July. We were walking around the city when we spotted the bike stand. We thought it was a great idea to see the city and free! We were asked for our IDs and our 20 CHF deposit each. We went for our ride that lasted 2 minutes because one of my friend's bike stopped working a couple of blocks ahead. We went back immediately to the bike stand thinking the bike would be changed, but oh surprise, surprise! My friend was asked to pay 40 CHF for the damage! I consider this a joke because we had literally just left the stand. Obviously the bike was already broken. If we had been all day with the bike, or if we had dropped it or if something bad had happened I would have accepted to pay but it wasn't our fault. The girl in charge rang her supervisor but she at the end said it was my friend's obligation to pay. Not her problem. All this for a 2 minutes ride!!! My only advice for other people would be NOT to use this "free service". After thinking it over, obviously they are making money for "repairs" caused by stupid people like us that believe we could actually get something for free. So beware!!!!
