Schilthorn, On top of Europe

by Scotty1023

Hi, I spent a week in Grindelwald and went all around the area via cable car. The Shilthorn is a restaurant only accesible by cable car and it is fantastic. The view is incredible. It was one of the nicest places of my trip to Switzerland. Go see it!

Your first 4000m peak...

by Tripack

Why not to climb a Swiss peak this summer... The Breithorn climbing for everyone...The Breithorn (4'164m) is the easiest four-thousand-metre peak in the area. Its snow-capped peak is rather flat and is thus easier to handle than most other mountains. A guide helps one get to the top in about two hours and the descent about 1 1/2 hours. On the top, the view is absolutely breath-taking, you will feel dominating all alpine peaks surroundings as the Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Dent Blanche, Obergabelhorn, Zinal Rothorn, Weisshorn, Mischabel and of course the Breithorn itself... You take the cable-car from Zermatt to the Klein Matterhorn and the tour starts at the mountain station of the Matterhorn glacier paradise (3'883m). Please note that one needs to be in good shape. Reservations at the "Alpin Center" located in the middle of the Bahnhofstasse.Alternative the Allain in Saas-Fee area:Your...

Saas Fee

by sandysmith

A beautiful village in the Valais region is Saas Fee. A high village (quieter than Zermatt but just as good for scenic hikes) where the glaciers come down right into town. Its at the end of a long valley reached by the post bus so not a good place for getting around to other places. Hey but once you were here, would you want to leave...? We enjoed a weeks hiking in this area in 2004 so please see much more info on my Sass Fee page.

horse n buggy

I chose this horse and buggy excursion booked through my escorted tour. We took this side trip to visit a farm that I wish I could remember the name of but there are many to be discovered. This is what our trail looked like.

Gandria

by sandysmith

Gandria is a tiny picturesque fishing village just outside of Lugano clinging to the lakeside and is easily reaced by boat. Its often frequented by artists and I'm not surprised its so pretty and colourful

Davos

by sandysmith

Davos is a great hiking area - the funicular and cable-cars take you up and down from a marvellous level panoramaweg across the Parsenn (seen in pic)- my kind of hiking!(CHECK OUT TRAVELOGUE ON DAVOS PAGE FOR MORE OF THIS HIKE). The woods at the lakeside are home to some of the friendliest red squirrels I've ever met - they love to be fed and will climb up you for food.

Vevey

by sandysmith

Not as well known as the resorts of Lausanne and Montreux but Vevey is a lovely lakeside resort on lake Geneva, between these two places. Vevey is also the world headquarters of Nestlé – all that lovely chocolate and the resting place of Charlie Chaplin. The lakeside is flanked by picturesque gardens and seahorse sculptures in the water!" It is the quieter neighbour to Montreux but has good trolley-bus service there.

Stalden and Gspon

by sandysmith

Stalden is an important road and rail junction in the Visp and Saastal valley. Trains here go up to Zermatt and buses up to Saas Fee, Saas Grund and Saas Almagel. (more on those places on their own pages)From Stalden a delightful old gondola wisks you up to the old settlements of Gspon - an unspoilt, totally untouristic working swiss village. Its the starting or end point of high level walks to or from Saas Grund.

Fribourg

by sandysmith

The city of Fribourg possesses an astonishing variety of architecture. The protected old town area - the most extensive in Europe - includes some 200 Gothic houses, numerous mansions combining German baroque and French classicism as well as churches and many monuments. It has a little old funicular which takes you down to the old town centre and its riverside walks.

Kandersteg

by sandysmith

Kandersteg (covered in Jungfau regional ticket) is an idyllic spot and a favouite area with walkers and hikers. A favourite trip here was a short cable car ride and than a 20 mins stretch (slightly uphill at first )to the beautiful Oeschiniesee. This is a glorious lake surrounded by many peaks. If you're staying in Interlaken are its definitely worth the detour here. Great place for a picnic. Much more pics and info on my Kandersteg and Oeschiniesee pages.
