The Silver Thistle (Carlina acaulis) is an alpine flower which grows in Central and Southern Europe from valleys up to mountainous regions of up to 2800 metres. Its typical flowering time is in late summer.
At the very beginning of October we spotted quite a few Silver Thistels on our hike at heights between 1600 and 1700 metres.

Miscellaneous: The free Rigi Guide is a very useful brochure which we picked up in the Arth-Rigi rack railway. The brochure should be also available at most train stations of all trains serving the Rigi Mountain routes.
Besides the train timetables and general info about the region, the Rigi Guide also includes both a summer and a winter map showing the principal hiking routes. These maps gave us a good idea of the length and difficulty of the various hikes.
The guide is mainly in German, but includes some basic info in English as well.

If there is a normal winter then you can tobogan up on the Rigi. The skining area is not so vast but good for families that don't want to travel to far.
From Rigi-Kaltbad you can do cross-country skiing the classical way to Scheidegg.
Equipment: You can hire tobogans for CHF 20/day in several locations on Rigi.
