That's what Samnaun is all about...as soon as you cross the border you enter a Tax-Free zone, so It's a good place to buy, sigarettes, alcohol and perfumes. There is also a gas station right across the border, so that makes it also a great place for buying cheap gasoline.

I had an icecream here and Lothar an Irish Coffee. Both was OK. When Lothar was talking with the waitress it was in an exotic language I never heard him speaking before. Samnaun Transportation

  • Bus free of charge

The Swiss part of the valley is served by a rather frequent bus which can be used free of charge - this hopefully can serve a little to bring the heavy car traffic a bit down although most of the cars come to Samnaun to fill up with the cheaper fuel. It seems a bit crazy first to transport the fuel up to a level of 1800 m and then the cars come...

  • Most people come by car

There are two roads to reach Samnaun. The easier one comes from Austria. When coming from Landeck a few km after the village Pfunds the road begins - only a few meters before the road to St. Moritz - Engadin. After about 10 hairpin turns the road runs at the Austrian side of the Samnaun valley high above the ground and turns before reaching the...

  • Most visitors come by car

The in ancient times difficult access to this valley (an easy path for ox carriages only from Tirol) is the reason for the duty free status. But today are two roads going to Samnaun, the Austrian one, a comfortable new road over relatively easy territory (at least as compared to the Swiss slopes in the lower part of the valley) and the Swiss one,...

  • "Nailing"

In this "game" the target is to get a nail in to a piece of wood with as little hammerstrokes as possible, this sounds easy but: you are only allowed to use the narrow side of the hammer....You are allowed to stick the nail in to the wood so far it won't fall down before you begin. Then you put the hammer at the edge of the wood and try to hit the...

The Austrian (EU) customs officers appear to be very friendly and easy going and do not check every car entering Austria from Samnaun but they can be very annoying if they detect you bringing duty free purchases, in particular cigarettes, in higher quantities than the allowed limits. In this case the fines are very high. Leaflets about the allowed...

Favorite thing: The Cable car station is located on the main road between Samnaun Dorf....and Samnaun Compatsch....you really cant miss it....

There is ample parking if you might be driving to the lift....or there are buses that service the entire community and the lift.

The cost for a day pass will run you about 45 Euros a day with various combination passes available.
