If you're going to the top..you can cross a line....some type of line...and cross into Austria without even knowing it....at the top...I can't remember the lift that we used...but I was approached by an Austrian Customs or Border person that wanted to see my papers...Im not sure exactly what she said..When I showed her my Canadian Passport she disappeared as quickly as she materilized...
I guess she decided that I wasn't a threat or that I wasnt smuggling anything...?

There are two roads to use to access Samnaun ...two different roads that will take you up the mountain and into the Resort area...
The second road is the most narrow...it is the first road built to go up the mountain...and the tunnels are QUITE narrow...so if youre not sure ask someone...before you ascend ESPECIALLY if youre driving skills are not the best!

The Austrian (EU) customs officers appear to be very friendly and easy going and do not check every car entering Austria from Samnaun but they can be very annoying if they detect you bringing duty free purchases, in particular cigarettes, in higher quantities than the allowed limits. In this case the fines are very high. Leaflets about the allowed items tobring into EU or Switzerland are available in the duty free shops.

The customs controls when leaving Samnaun either to the EU or the Swiss mainland are mostly relaxed but of course it can happen that the one or other car or person is checked as prescribed in their service manuals and should the customs detect undeclared items it can - especially if it is tobacco - result in exorbitant fines!
Every duty free shop has leaflets indicating exactly what one may bring over the frontier into the EU or Switzerland.

The Skiing area in Samnaun is very high up. Normaly you ski from about 2'000 m up to nearly 3'000m above sea level.
So of course you need to watch out for alpine dangers. You will be fine if you stay on the marked ski runs ore paths.
Don't forget to use suitable clothes, when skiing a good jacket and warm clothes. I've seen temperatures down to -25°C brrr...... In the spring months the sun can be very warm but as soon its gone it gets freezing cold. The sun is very strong in that hight so you need a good sun lotion so you won't burn yourself.
Watch out for weather changes and the sometimes very strong wind. On the picture you can see the wind blowing snow over the top of a mountain. Even with the sun the temperature was about -15-°C that day.
