Unterseen is the "cradle" of Interlaken, it is there, where this place originated more than 800 years ago and this row of beautiful houses at the historic main-square of Unterseen - its official name is "Obere Gasse" - was restored some time ago and consists of appartments for elderly people, who are able to help each other and will find all shops and doctors in the area.
For you as a tourist it might be nice to take a walk along the beautifully restored facades dating back to different times in history. My favorite house is that half-timbered one !

There are still many farmers in the very centre of Unterseen and they are not giving up their farms and cattle, although many hotel-owners are trying hard to buy their land and build even more hotels and appartment-houses...
This place on my picture is opposite of Minotel Beau Site, where a small garden has several goats and children may feed them with old bread, it is funny to watch them, too.

At many places all over Unterseen you will be able to see some great excamples of the lovely wooden buildings that you would expect normally mainly in the mountains.
All of these buildings are still in use nowadays and kept well by their owners.
my 1st picture : this building is next to Hotel Hardermannli and Hotel Roessli, with a small shop for milk, cheese and other such products.
My 2nd picture : this building is opposite of restaurant Baeren, at the 1st crossing, when coming from Interlaken West.

When you take a look at the map of Interlaken and Unterseen, you will see the river Aare that makes the border between both towns, that are mostly considdered just one village, although they are not.
The river Aare flows from Brienzer See through Interlaken to Thuner See and some locks are blocking to way for the ships to go from one lake to the other, so you have to change ships and go by train from one ship to the other.
GOLDEY-promenade is the scenic path along the river Aare ffrom Brienzersee to Thunersee and walking all of that distance will take about 2 hours or even more, BUT it is really nice and a great idea to relax, also biking along the river is possible, there is only just local trafic there.

The old church of Unterseen dates back to the year 1471 and it was built at a place, where a chapel used to be already in the 14th century. In 1674 the church burned down and was rebuilt again, in 1841 it was made larger but already 10 years later the top broke down because of the heavy snow, so the church that you see today dates back to 1853, except of the tower that is still the same since 1471. The interior of the church is quite simple, as you may see on my 3rd and 4th picture.
