    Saegistalsee - a lovely lake

Saegistalsee is the name of the small mountain-lake that you will pass by in a short distance, when taking the scenic hiking-path from Schynige Platte to Faulhorn and finally to Grindelwald/First. Saegistalsee is in the hight of 1937 meters above sea-level, at about half of the way between Weberhuette (read more about it in my restaurant-tip!) and the Faulhorn-Hotel.
There is even a farmouse or rather a larger hut there, maybe some people spend the summer here or had some cows around the lake in former years, at least the area around of it looks a lot greener than anywhere else that high above the valley.
I could not find an official walking-path to this lake, but you may see it even from a long distance when walking to Faulhorn.
Saegistalsee is high above Iseltwald, BUT the steep rocks around the lake will not allow you to walk down directely from Seagistalsee to Iseltwald, the hiking-path between First and Schynige Platte is the only way to get there !

Bachalpsee & an (almost) perfect reflection
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bachalpsee might be the last highlight of your hike from Wilderswil / Schynige Platte to First and Grindelwald : Bachalpsee is for sure one of the most beautiful mountain-lakes of the area and you will see it at many postcards and posters with the mountains reflecting in the lake like in a mirror. It is a pity that on my picture there are also a few clouds, but at least it was sunny while I was there.
Hikingtime from Schynige Platte to Bachalpsee will be around 4-5 hours (+ the time that you might have spent at Saegistalsee or Faulhorn etc.) You may as well come from the other side and take the train from Wilderswil to Grindelwald, then the cablecar to First and from there you may hike to Bachalpsee within 45 minutes - the path is easy and rather flat, with fine gravel and no rocks - a small street, that could also be used by wheelchairs and Kinderwagen, bikes etc. when you come from First ! When arriving from Faulhorn or Schynige Platte you will have a steep and slippery path downhill !
When you intend to take a picture of the reflecting mountains, you have to step down to the water-level and take the picture from there !!

  • Directions: Bachalpsee is in a height of 2265 meters above sea-level,4-5 hours to walk to from Schynige Platte and just 45 minutes to walk from the First-station.

    The old church of Wilderswil
  • Tip Rating:
  • The old church of Wilderswil is a must, when you pass by this charming village by car on your way to Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. At first you will come to a giant entrance-hall that was onviously ment as a first shelter for the people, who arrived for church-service by skis or sleds from all of the farms in the mountains closeby. This hall is still open all day long for hikers, who need shelter in heavy rain or snow.
The church has a few old frescos and the rest is not so very special, after all it is a protestant church.

  • Directions: The old church of Wilderswil is about 400 meters from the train-station, you may also drive there by a small car (not higher than 2,50 meters and not more tha 2 tons !)

Schynige Platte - high above Wilderswil
  • Tip Rating:
  • Schynige Platte is a mountain-plateau high above Wilderswil and a tiny cog-wheel-train is taking you up a breath-taking track to one of the less popular hiking-areas of the Jungfrau-region.
Schynige Platte is in a height of 1967 meters above sea-level and offers various attractions like
1)Teddyland - an attaraction for the whole family
2)the Alpengarten with 500 different alpine flowers
    3)the Schynige Platte-restaurant and alpine-hotel:
    Hotel Schynige Platte, CH-3800 Interlaken

the old wooden houses in the centre of Wilderswil
  • Tip Rating:
  • In the centre of Wilderswil - close to the church and the wooden bridge - you will find some really beautiful wooden houses in the traditional swiss style. In many other places these types of houses are modern replicas, but in Wilderswil they date back plenty of centuries and the best ones are between the train-station and the church.
For many months I was living inside such a house and it seems to be aching with each step you are doing, but it is so cosy in winter-time and always smells good.

the covered wooden bridge of Wilderswil
  • Tip Rating:
  • The covered wooden bridge of Wilderswil is one of my favorite sights of that small village ! It is interesting to see this old construction standing now for so many decades or even centuries, still in everyday use by all people driving or walking to the church. That river Luetschine looks quite small on my picture, in times of floods it is getting quite strong, but never really affected that great bridge.

    Faulhorn - a great day-excursion
  • Tip Rating:
  • Faulhorn in a hight of 2681 meters above sea-level is one of these places in the Jungfrau-region that you may only hike to, although there is quite a large hotel and restaurant and you may get there from Wilderswil, when you take first the train to Schynige Platte and go hiking then for 2-3 hours.
Faulhorn was the very first alpine-hotel built in Switzerland and it dates back to 1830 and the rich tourists were carried by special chairs by the local people.
The prices in the restaurant and the simple hotel are quite reasonable, when you considder, that all goods have to be taken up there "the hard way"
When intending to spend the night in the hotel - make sure you reserve in advance !!

    Alpengarten Schynige Platte
  • Tip Rating:
  • Alpengarten Schynige Platte is a great place to go for the whole family. A path of 500 meters is leading you through a garden, where you may see all of the 500 different flowers that are growing in the alpine regions of Switzerland. Not all of them are blooming at the same time and so you may see a calender at the web-page below, telling you what flowers are blooming at what time.
    Alpengarten Schynige Platte is open
between june and mid of September (weather depending!)
    daily between 08.30a.m. and 06.00p.m.
the entrance-fee is 4,- sfr (1,- reduction with guestcard)
students & children pay 1,- sfr
guided tours are possible in german, engl.&french
1h is 50,- sfr extra for these tours !
I have been in the Alpengarden some years ago, but in sept. 2005, when I came back in order to do this hiking from Schynige Platte to Faulhorn and First I was in a hurry to get in time to First, so all of the pics that see with this tip are flowers that I met along my hiking-path

There isn't too much to do here, there are a few hotels to accomodate the spillover from Interlaken but the only reason we had for being here was to catch the train.
