Money . . . How do I get it?

by Beausoleil

If you are traveling from the United States of America, your credit cards do not contain a microchip that is in all European credit cards. You will encounter a few problems but they are not insurmountable.First, you can use your cards in European ATM machines so you can get money. I highly recommend you use only bank ATM machines during banking hours. If your card is eaten or damaged by the machine, you can go inside the bank and get it back. We've had this happen twice and once had to wait through the ending of lunch for the bank to reopen so we could get our card back. We also had a card damaged by a credit card machine in a business so it's a good idea to take at least two cards with you just in case.Ticket machines are a problem. Most will not accept American credit cards. This means you can't use automated ticket machines at railroads and subways. In this case, there is nearly...

The United Kingdom is composed of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and, in fact, its full official name is The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The kingdom lies between the North Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea with the nearest neighbour being France which is situated 22 miles off the South-East coast. Queen Elizabeth the second is the head of state of the United Kingdom as well as of fifteen other independent Commonwealth countries. The UK's three major political parties are the Conservative Party, the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats.See My Travel Page for more information.

Sweden - Sverige

by grayfo

Sweden has the largest population of the Nordic countries. It is separated in the west from Norway by a range of mountains and shares the Gulf of Bothnia at the north end of the Baltic Sea with Finland. The country has a large number of lakes and forests and is ideal for outdoor activities during the long daylight hours of the summer. Some of the things that the Sweden is noted for include the midnight sun, the northern lights, Lapland, ABBA and dishes containing herrings.December 1975See My Travel Page for more information.

Church of Peace - Potsdam, Germany

by Raimix

Church of Peace was built in the middle of 19th century not so far from Sanssouci palace. Church looks Italian monastery style, Romantic. It is quite interesting, that church' apse is decorated by 13th century Venetian mosaic, that was bought by prince Frederick William, taken from Murano, Venice, Italy.Place looks quite peaceful, all around is a green nature.

Sanssouci palace - Potsdam, Germany

by Raimix

This palace is the biggest rococo building in whole Germany and I guess the main attraction in Potsdam, always shown in travel magazines and advertisements.Palace was built in 1747 and was the main summer residence of Frederick the Great (rule time 1740–1786). The terraces was used for vinegars. Is is really great place to walk and enjoy rich architecture. I haven't been inside, it was used as picture gallery.

Zwinger palace - Dresden, Germany

by Raimix

Zwinger palace was one of the most beautiful palaces I ever seen. I was thinking I will be bored of baroque - rokoko style, but it was vise versa. As I read, it is one of the best examples of late baroque style in Germany.Giant palace, called also as Zwinger palace, was built in 1710 – 1728 by the architect Poppelmann. First purpose of this place was an orangery. What Zwinger means? It is old German word, meaning part of a fortification between the outer and inner defensive walls.

Cathedral - Dresden, Germany

by Raimix

Cathedral was built in 1739 – 1755 and known as the youngest baroque building in Dresden. It is monumental, very in detail architecture, also it houses scripts with 49 sarcophagus (Wettin princes), also the hearth of Augustus the Strong. Saxony has no other bigger church than Cathedral. Is is one of the most beautiful buildings in Dresden, also one church, that is possible to see inside (some of them are used for other purposes).

Church of Our Lady - Dresden, Germany

by Raimix

Church was built in baroque style in 1726 – 1743. Second World War damaged church and for some time it was standing as a symbol of peace, anti-war. Church was fully restored only in 2005. Actually, as I understand, who money for reconstruction was taken by donation of people, so it shows solidarity and sensibility to war devastation.

Boims' chapel - Lviv, Ukraine

by Raimix

Chapel was constructed in 1611 - 1616 as a burial place of Boim's family, by agreement three generation was buried here. Long time ago there was a cemetery around Latin Cathedral, so it was a part of cemetery.Boim family was invited by Polish - Lithuanian king Stefan Batory to stay in Lviv. One of members of Boim's family - Pavlo - was a doctor and traveler, traveled to China, after that he wrote a manuscript about culture of China, medicine.Chapel is impressive both outside and inside. It is a very good example of late Renaissance.
