Valencia was a total surprise to us. Both hubby and I loved Valencia! This diverse city has so many things to see and experience from great food to old decorative buildings, to new amazing architecture, to a white sand beach, to a stunning lake to friendly locals. Sadly we just didn't allow enough time to check out this fabulous city!What made our trip extra special was vt'er Mahesh (MaheshSamtani) who took the time out from his busy job to pick us up and show us around. Hubby wanted to experience the South of Spain countryside as he had heard that it is a mixture of hills, greenery and arid type landscape. Hubby was looking forward to giving his flash camera gear a good work out :o)Well after doing some research on vt, I stumbled across this little village of Ronda on top of a mountain with a bridge that was some 100metres high that expanded across one side of the town to the other. Well we had to see that! :o)If you are travelling southern Spain, then you must stick this place on your itinery! We enjoyed our day immensely! La Alhambra was one of the hilights for hubby on our big Europe trip as he studdied the gardens here in his Diploma of Garden Design. The use of gardens, running water and fountains in amongst ancient Arabic Architecture and tile work is what makes this place one of the largest tourist destinations in the world. So much so that thousands visit each day and you need to pre-book your tickets.I would certainly recommend that you visit here but I would have to say that I enjoyed the gardens of Monet and the Marjorelle Gardens in Marrakech better.La Alhambra
Spain was hubby's choice in our Europe trip. Hubby wanted to see the Alhambra in South Spain so we based ourselves here in Torremolinos, hired a convertible car, primed the Tom Tom GPS and hit the road :o)Hubby was also looking forward to driving in southern Spain so when I suggested we hire a convertible car, hubby was as excited as a pig in poo!! :o)Torremolinos was nothing special to us. Coming from Australia we are pretty spoilt when it comes to beaches..... but we were quite happy with the place that we stayed in which was recommended by quite a few vt'ers who regularly stay here. I'm glad that we chose Torremolinos for the fact that it is not too far away from Malaga airport (we arrived from Morocco) and also it is central if you want to visit Alhambra north and towns south such as Mijas and Ronda (also recommended).Check out my Torremolinos page for an overall picture of this nice...
Paris was my first choice of places to see in Europe. I had been looking forward to visiting Paris since I can remember and it was everything I had expected and more!My only regret was only seeing a portion of what I wanted to see. I didn't even see the Arch de Triomph!! I have so many fantastic memories and I won't write them all down again here, but I really encourage you to check out my Paris page on the link below. Amsterdam was also one of the first places on my trip itinery and that was mainly because of the lovely canals and also meeting my good old vt friend PJ (pieter_jan_v).We outlayed a bit of extra money and booked a stay on a houseboat which was awesome! You must do that! :o)Amsterdam was very busy and the bike riders are crazy!.... but thanks to locals PJ and Dianne (dila) we had a great time being shown around. Amsterdam at night is especially lovely and we enjoyed a day trip to nearby Zaanse Schans to see the windmills and a quaint little village. Link below -Amsterdam
Ahhhh Romantic Brugge! Where do I start?...Brugge was one of the 1st on my list of places to see when visiting Europe. I fell in love with Brugge whilst visiting iandsmith's pages here on vt. iandsmith had taken som awesome night photos and I thought.....wow! How romantic!! :o) Well not only did hubby and I take some amazing night shots, but we had a fantastic vt meet with the locals and enjoyed many other fun activities in this beautiful scenic town.If you are planning a trip to Europe, I would strongly suggest you do not miss seeing Brugge! :o) Check it out by clicking the link below -Romantic Brugge
Most people when visiting Belgium choose Brussels and Brugge. I beg to differ after seeing Gent. I would definately choose Gent and Brugge. Gent has so much going for it! Not only did we have the best canal experience in Gent but we also enjoyed visiting a pub with over 250 selections of beer, saw a stack of weddings, enjoyed walking through an awesome grafitti street and had the pleasure of seeing inside a beautiful old church. Yes, this was certainly a pleasant surprise for us and given the chance again, we would happily stay an extra day or two in beautiful Gent.All this was coupled with being shown around this gorgeous city by lovely vt member Erwin (Joeplaboem). Lier is an interesting little village in Belgium that I think is a well kept secret. Not only does Lier have lovely canals like it's well known sister Brugge but it also has the added advantage of the locals being known as Sheep Heads. I am not going to tell you the full story of why that is so here. You will have to check out the link below :o)Lier was special for me because we enjoyed a great little vt meet for my birthday. The locals sure made us feel welcome! Lier also has a unique Zimmer Clock in it's main square and a very old Beguinage village that was absolutely amazing to see.I strongly encourage you to stop off and visit lovely Lier if you are passing close by!Lier
