Amsterdam - Bikes, Boats and Booze

Amsterdam was also one of the first places on my trip itinery and that was mainly because of the lovely canals and also meeting my good old vt friend PJ (pieter_jan_v).We outlayed a bit of extra money and booked a stay on a houseboat which was awesome! You must do that! :o)Amsterdam was very busy and the bike riders are crazy!.... but thanks to locals PJ and Dianne (dila) we had a great time being shown around. Amsterdam at night is especially lovely and we enjoyed a day trip to nearby Zaanse Schans to see the windmills and a quaint little village. Link below -Amsterdam

Ahhhh Romantic Brugge! Where do I start?...Brugge was one of the 1st on my list of places to see when visiting Europe. I fell in love with Brugge whilst visiting iandsmith's pages here on vt. iandsmith had taken som awesome night photos and I thought.....wow! Gent - A Charming Surprise City

Most people when visiting Belgium choose Brussels and Brugge. I beg to differ after seeing Gent. I would definately choose Gent and Brugge. Gent has so much going for it! Not only did we have the best canal experience in Gent but we also enjoyed visiting a pub with over 250 selections of beer, saw a stack of weddings, enjoyed walking through an awesome grafitti street and had the pleasure of seeing inside a beautiful old church. Yes, this was certainly a pleasant surprise for us and given the chance again, we would happily stay an extra day or two in beautiful Gent.All this was coupled with being shown around this gorgeous city by lovely vt member Erwin (Joeplaboem). Lier - Little Brugge & Locals called Sheep Heads

Lier is an interesting little village in Belgium that I think is a well kept secret. Not only does Lier have lovely canals like it's well known sister Brugge but it also has the added advantage of the locals being known as Sheep Heads. I am not going to tell you the full story of why that is so here. You will have to check out the link below :o)Lier was special for me because we enjoyed a great little vt meet for my birthday. The locals sure made us feel welcome! Lier also has a unique Zimmer Clock in it's main square and a very old Beguinage village that was absolutely amazing to see.I strongly encourage you to stop off and visit lovely Lier if you are passing close by!Lier

Tongeren Defeats Ceaser

We hadn't planned to visit Tongeren but as it turned out, at the last minute we picked up KShezz to take her to Lier for a vt meet. So we had the pleasure of Kirsty showing us around her town and having a beer with Kirsty whilst hearing about the history of Tongeren.Turns out that Tongeren has a unique history about how this fella called Ambiorix stopped Ceaser from invading and taking over the town. Braubach Rhine Rvr & Magnificant Marksburg Castle

This is one place that I would come back to a base myself for a few days. There just wasn't enough time this trip.The Magnificant Marksburg Castle would have been wonderful to wander around. I had heard so many good things about it. Instead we just had to view it from down below and enjoy some great peeks of it through the morning white mist....very nice!Another thing we did not do was see the Andernach Geyser up the road near Koblenz. That I believe is a full day trip and well worth it. Another place that I wanted to see was Bad Munstereifel, a quaint historical spa town. But....there just isn't time to do everything.So.... if you have the time....then check out my suggestions above and base yourself at the lovely Braubach on the Rhine River :o) ....but beware....if you book at the same accommodation as us....make sure they don't stick you across the road on the barn.... ;o)Here's the...

Oestrich-Winkel and Castles on the Rhine River

The Rhine River is a definate must do when visiting Germany. We chose to drive along the right hand side and stopped off at Oestric-Winkel for lunch. This was our first view of the lovely Rhine River and a nice old transport crane on the river front. Just outside Oestrich-Winkel we spotted the Mauseturm - Mouse Castle. I had been looking forward to seeing this cute castle with an interesting history parked on a small island in the middle of the Rhine River so when I spotted it.... that was an exciting moment :o)The Rhine River has a castle around every bend. The scenery was magnificant and with heaps of lovely vinyards on the hill sides. This part of our journey was most enjoyable and I am sure you will love it too!Oestrich-Winkel, Castles and the Rhine River

Wurzburg and a Magnificant Palace

We experience our first Palace experience here in Wurzburg....and what a grand Palace it was. Purched on top of the hill overlooking the city and river.The views were the best bit :o) Every place that we visited in Europe had something new and unique to see. Kitzingen - Off the beaten path but lovely

If you are driving through the middle of Germany, Kitzingen is definately worth a stop for a wander along the nice river. Kitzingen is about 20mins north of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.Being a relatively quiet little town, it is also good for a bite to eat and beer in one of the street cafes. We did that and enjoyed a relaxing hour or so people watching and planning our next leg of the journey.Kitzingen
