Ettlingen - Small Town, Awesome Locals

by aussirose

We chose Ettlingen rather than stay in larger Karlsruhe close by. Great choice! :o)Ettlingen is quaint with a lovely little river running through the centre and nice gardens. What made Ettlingen the most enjoyable was meeting Kathrin (Kathrin_E) and Christine (tini58de) who really made us feel most welcome. Our whole memory of Ettlingen is one of fun and laughter amongst beautiful surroundings :o) Please click the link below.Ettlingen

Uberlingen - A Pretty Town on Lake Constance

by aussirose

Have you ever stuck a pin on a map and said....let's go there? Well that was pretty much what we did when we ended up at Uberlingen. Uberlingen is located on the top end of Lake Constance so this incorporated a nice journey over the lake on the ferry.I'm glad that Birgit (bijo69) who joined us on our trip chose this pretty little place. Obviously us internationals don't know a lot of small towns so we didn't really know what to expect but we were pleasantly surprised. We drove through on a Sunday which probably wasn't a really good idea as it seems that every tom, dick, harry and the dog were in town :o) The place was a hive of activity and we had to park quite a way....but the whole experience was just lovely. Check it out on the link below.Uberlingen

Zurich - City of Clocks

by aussirose

Zurich was our first destination of our big Europe trip. Flying into Zurich over the Alps was awesome!! We found Zurich to be clean but also very expensive. I just loved the clocks here!...Something that we had been looking forward to......coming from Perth with our pathetic little chiming bell tower on the water front hahaaa :o) Our hilight in Zurich was a lovely day trip on the ferry to Raperswil. We chose a B&B in between the airport and the city which was a great choice and we totally recommend it. Zurich was a great choice to start our big journey. We picked up our hire car here and continued our journey through Germany.....next destination Lake Constance on the Switzerland/Germany border and a nice little town called Uberlingen. To check out our Zurich adventure and trip to Rapperswil, please click the link below.Zurich

The last day of Pompeii

by csordila

The city of Pompeii along with Herculaneum was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in the year AD 79. The Downfall of Pompeii was centered on the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79.The eruption buried Pompeii under 4 to 6 m of ash and eruption that lasted two days, killed more than 10,000 people, it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1749. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. I was a little child when I visited with my parents here.I do not remember correctly but I was quite impressed, and all the reading I did prior to the trip really made it more interesting. The people of Pompei were brilliant, and made some contributions during their day.

Belgium

Official Name: Kingdom of Belgium; Land Area: 11,786 square miles (30,528 square kilometers); Population: 10,431,447; Capital: Brussels; Largest City: BrusselsThe Manneken Pis is a fountain which represents a little boy urinating into the basin of the fountain, and it has become an iconic symbol of Brussels. The current Manneken Pis was sculpted in bronze by Jerôme Duquesnoy in 1619, but an earlier version in stone had been present as early as 1388. There is disagreement over who the Manneken Pis represents, but one of the favorite legends involves a boy named Juliaanske. When a foreign power was attacking Brussels in the fourteenth century, soldiers planted explosives to destroy some sort of barricade. The soldiers did not know that Juliaanske had been spying on them. After they lit the fuse, he urinated on it and saved the city. On occasion, the people of Brussels dress up the Manneken...

Croatia

by traveldave

Official Name: Republic of Croatia; Land Area: 21,782 square miles (56,414 square kilometers); Population: 4,483,804; Capital: Zagreb; Largest City: ZagrebIn the summer of 1982, I passed through what was then northern Yugoslavia, long before the political, military, and ethnic problems which recently split the country apart. At the time, Yugoslavia was a relatively peaceful country with no hint of the difficulties that were to come. The people were friendly and curious about Westerners. The areas I visited then are today part of the nations of Croatia and Slovenia. The areas through which I passed were mainly agricultural, and the farmers used technology from the previous century. Both men and women--mostly older people--were cutting hay on the hillsides with sickles. Others were carrying the hay to be loaded onto horse-drawn carts which seemed to have the right-of-way on the narrow...
