Parliament is made up of the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It is a prominent landmark, and is one of the most recognizable sights of London. The original palace was built by Edward the Confessor in the last half of the eleventh century, and served as the royal residence. In 1547 the royal residence was moved to Whitehall Palace. At that time, the House of Lords began to meet in Westminster Palace, and the House of Commons met in the nearby Saint Stephen's Chapel. In 1834, a fire destroyed most of the original Westminster Palace. The current building was built in the Gothic Revival style by...

It was designed so that the greatest number of people could see the Pope give his blessing. Although called a "square," it is actually trapezoidal in shape near the entrance to the basilica and preceded by a vast eliptical area.Saint Peter's Square was designed by architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini under the direction of Pope Alexander VII. Contruction lasted from 1656 to 1667. The most prominent feature of the square is its two semicircular colonnades which enclose the square. Austria

by traveldave

Official Name: Republic of Austria; Land Area: 32,378 square miles (83,860 square kilometers); Population: 8,217,280; Capital: Vienna; Largest City: ViennaThe area that would one day become Salzburg was settled by the Celts in about 15 B.C. The area is rich in salt, and the Celts established settlements in order to mine the mineral. In about 45 A.D., the settlement came under the Romans, who called it Juvavum. Not much happened in the area until about 700 A.D. At that time, Saint Rupert chose the settlement as the site of a monastery and bishopric. He also renamed it Salzburg, which is German for "Salt Fortress." For the next 1,000 years, Salzburg was ruled by the archbishops of Salzburg, the leading ecclesiastics of the German-speaking world. During their reign, most of Salzburg's historic buildings were constructed. In 1802, Salzburg was transferred to Bavaria, which ruled the area...

England

by Maria81

Places to visit:- London: my hometown. The city of the Queen, the Tower, Sherlock Holmes and the 5 o'clock tea. Also one of the best places in the world for museums (the British Museum and the National Gallery are, of course, top picks) and to catch a theatre show. On any date, there are 30+ musicals and plays running. And for off the beaten path:- A theme tour: we've done two - following Harry Potter movie locations and places connected with the Cheshire Cat. Best done as driving trips, they offer a chance to see different, less touristy EnglandThings to do:- A hike along one of the 15+ national trails: these are long-distance paths, usually tracing a geographical feature or a historical theme (South West Coast Path, for example). Most are well waymarked and offer stunning views, especially when the weather is good.- Catch a spectator sport: there are of course, 2012 Olympics coming to...

Italy

by Maria81

Places to visit- Rome: pick any historical age and Rome offers such an impressive list of monuments that you need a week for each Rome: the Ancient Rome, Christian Rome, Baroque Rome, Museum Rome. And that's before we even get to shopping :)- Venice: San Marco and the canals are among the most famous sights (and, alas, the most crowded), and are the backdrop to the amazing Venice carnival. Don't forget the gondola trips, the museums and galleries, and Harry's Bar - birthplace of the Bellini cocktailAnd for off the beaten path:- Matera: a small sassi town in the south of the country, mostly carved out from the surrounding cavesThings to do:- Go skiing and people watching in the Alps - stunning scenery will more than compensate for tired legs and money spent on the trip! - Try the local cuisine, whichever part of Italy you are in - south, north, west, centre or east. We've had the most...

From Turkey to Poland

by 68maciek

Poland/per person:USD rate is very volatile. Not long time ago (6 months?) it was below 3 PLN. It is 3.42 at the moment.I have heard that Poland has the cheapest accommodation in the region, however you can easily find better prices in Berlin or London than in Warszawa/Krakow. 20-40PLN per accommodation in a PTTK mountain hostel/dormitory shared bathroomProbably you should multipily it minimum by two for any kind of accommodation in (touristic)towns (for a single person). The cheapest in the mountains are something called studencka chatka (students sheleter). Everybody can sleep there. The seasonal youth hostels PTSM are cheap. Two course lunch (day offers)10-20PLNCost of food in a grocery shop 20 PlNMuseum tickets 5-40PLN (many museums have one day for free in a week).I'm sorry, but I never have been to opera (and rather not going to visit) hahaha. Not my type of place. But I like...

Europe

by 68maciek

As Plantxty somehow mentioned above Central-Eastern Europe is far more cheaper than rotted (hahaha-just a joke) Western.I include also Turkey as a part of cheaper (maybe not Istanbul and travel offices resorts)- so better for travellers- Europe for my money. To simplify I count costs here 20-50% cheaper (depends on the country and a comodity.Bulgaria is probably far more cheaper than mentioned above Croatia or Slovenia. And looking in the neighbourhood- Albania may be quite fascinating (I'd like to go there)- but transport ease maybe an issue there. I prefer discover hidden gems instaed of iconic, usually owerpriced and crowded places. So,rather Kutna Hora than Praha(Czechia), Bursa than Istanbul (but it can't be ommited), Bergamo than Milano (Italy). But, this is my strange personal opinion. I can give you more (my personal choice) tips about Eastern-Central Europe if you ask more...

Favourite Statues: Steinbock, Zermatt

by Maryimelda

Zermatt has quite a number of lovely simple statues that tell it like it is. The Steinbock has got to be my favourite. He's such a handsome chap and stands in pride of place in front of the Matterhorn Museum.Update: Thank you Michael (globetrott) for putting me straight about my "mountain goat" which he has kindly pointed out is in actual fact a "Steinbock/an Ibex". There are quite a few facts I would like to know that are connected to tips of mine. Please people, feel free to supply them at any time. I'd be most grateful. Thanks again Michael.
