At sea on wheels

by Maryimelda

By the time, we headed off from Naples to Sicily, we were getting a little weary, soa nine hour train trip was actually most welcome as it would give us a chance to sit still for a while and catch our breath. The highlight of the trip as far as we were concerned was the crossing from Villa San Giovanni to Messina. Whilst I knew that we would have to cross to Messina in a ferry, I couldn't quite believe it when I was told that they put the entire train on to the ferry! But sure enough, that's what happened and the entire process was amazing. One minute we were on a train travelling down the west coast of Italy and the next minute (or so it seemed) after a small amount of huffing and puffing and toing and froing, we were on a huge ferry at sea without ever leaving our seats! The train was divided into two sections which sat side by side in the hold of the vessel. The short trip allowed us...

Inter City Express: ICE

by hunterV

I enjoyed traveling by ICE in Germany: from Cologne to Berlin in 4.5 hours! Fantastic! You don't even feel you are going by train, feel relaxed and the journey does not seem tiresome at all. Besides, you can admire the passing landscapes and even take pictures.I enjoyed that experience!

National railway companies

by ATLC

I am working on a list of national railway companies in Europe. Although there are European railpasses like Eurail, many replies to Travel forum questions have shown that buying your tickets locally is a much cheaper option. You can choose local trains that do not require advance reservations and are more frequent and often not much slower than the fast trains like TGV or ICE.Behind the country name, I'll list the general website. Under 'click here' I'll put the English version if available.Austria - www.oebb.at or click hereBelgium - www.b-rail.be or click hereDenmark - www.dsb.dk or click hereFinland - www.vr.fi or click hereFrance - www.voyages-sncf.com or click hereGermany- www.bahn.de or click hereGreece - www.ose.gr or click hereItaly - www.ferroviedellostato.it or click hereLatvia - sirius.ldz.lv or click hereNetherlands - www.ns.nl or click hereNorway - www.nsb.no or click...

Taxis in Europe

by Maryimelda

There are many taxi scams operating in Europe just as there are in most parts of the world. This should not stop you using a taxi every now and then when it would be the most convenient option. Just be sure to ask the driver for an approximate cost before he has stowed your luggage and has you all seated and strapped into the car. Another precaution is to make sure that the driver puts the meter on when you get in.My experience of taxis in places like Rome, Paris, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich etc. has always been good. I learnt my lesson the hard way in Prague when I was charged 31 Euro for a four minute ride to my hotel. This was a one off for me because, as I said, I learnt my lesson and saw to it that it never happened again. As long as you get your taxi on a designated taxi stand in Rome, you will have no problem. In Paris, I have never had a problem of any sort.I guess that the point I...

AUG 2010 cheapest way London to Paris: Bus service

by budapest8

Backpackers and travellers on a shoe-string rejoice. Eurolines, a part of UK bus carrier National Express has reduced the fare of their bus service from London to Paris, a hotly competitive route currently served by dozens of air and rail carriers. To date, Eurostar and budget air carriers have fought hard over the route, with fares on either sinking as low as $100 round trip. I made my first trip alone across the channel back in the '70's hitching with a lorry driver from Dover to Calais when 'Duty Free' was something sought after. These days hundreds of Africans are camped out in make shift shanty towns on the outskirts of Calais trying to smuggle themselves in or under lorries crossing over to England.Currently, one of the most common inexpensive routes taken is via low cost carrier such as Easyjet, where non-peak flights can often be found for a bargain. Eurostar, conversely,...

International km-based ticket is a true railpass!

by GyuriFT

A bit about the tickets which are NEITHER "point-to-point", nor "railpass" - but instead a healthy mix of both. This sounds maybe very weird for most people - but they did not realized, many times they had such tickets while traveling internationally. It's obvious while reading the rules of such tickets. Best guess that your so-called "point-to-point" ticket is in the reality a "relation ticket" or "routing ticket" is to look at it: if that ticket is not a single sheet of paper but a booklet - than it most likely is. True "point-to-point" tickets are rarely sold in the booklets, but in recent few years railways of some countries skip the booklet for computer-generated tickets. Hand-written international tickets are ALWAYS "relation tickets", one single exception is Hungary, here even deeply (beyond usual regular discounts) discounted tickets are hand-written, except if issued for Italy...

From Lugano to Bellagio

by microsensazione

Here I am with a feasible plan (year 2010 timetables):By train leave "Lugano" at 9.48 and arrive in "Como S.Giovanni" at 10.14......and by boat leave "Como" at 11.10 (12.25 on weekdays) and arrive in Bellagio at 11.53 (13.07 on weekdays)To reach the boat from "Como S.Giovanni" train station you have 750 meters (the departing shore is in "Piazza Cavour").You could verify this plan taking a look on the following links:About trains:http://www.ferroviedellostato.it/homepage_en.htmlAbout boats:http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/com/ora_estivo_2010/nlc_ora_sr1b_e.htmlhttp://www.navigazionelaghi.it/eng/com/loc/como.htmlHope to be useful!Fabrizio
