Overseas visitors: touch down in East Europe first

by GyuriFT

One reason why I try to suggest the visitors from overseas to touch down in the East part of Europe first is to buy your train tickets. The more people traveling together, the bigger is the saving, even disproportionally big.1) RAIL+ costs only 25 Euro here, in the West rarely less, than 40-50 Euro.2) There is no problem to get even most complicated through tickets, written "by hand" - while in West Europe you have to push hard the agencies to do you a favor3) We have extensive CITY-STAR discount system, not available in the West4) The contingent with the "space limited" tickets (typically 29-39 Euro) to/from Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary if bought in Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary is much bigger than the same thing in the "West"5) The local discount between the cities of East Europe is very big, typically 10-30 Euro will buy a long trip. If for some reason there is an offer in Slovakia not...

Railpass and "point-to-point" tickets

by GyuriFT

In most cases (99%) the pass (any pass) is a rip-off.In most cases there is no such thing as "point-to-point ticket", that is a misnomer and an "invention" for overseas tourists. True "point-to-point ticket"-s do exist, but for overseas traveler they are not easy to come by unless you know what you are doing. People buy "relation tickets" - and it could be a big difference.Example:Say, you are traveling from Budapest to Augsburg and want to see Vienna, Salzburg, Rosenheim, Munich. What people do is not to buy Budapest->Vienna, Vienna->Salzburg, Salzburg->Rosenheim, Rosenheim->Munich tickets (you would call them "point-to-point tickets"). Instead, we just buy a single Budapest->Munich ticket and go on and off the train in every station in-between, that is: Vienna, Salzburg, Rosenheim. The validity of such ticket is one month, the price is 95 Euro without reduction.

Buses Ahtens to Tirana(Albania)

by gilpema

Hello, I got the bus from Athens to Tirana 2 years ago.The buses they leave from Athens around 8 PM and thy arrive around 10-11AM in Tirana at Stadiumi Dinamo. The departure from Athens is from near to an metro station SYNTAGMA. You have an lot of buses that they leave around that moment and they go all around of Albania. The cost is from 30 euros AlbanianInterlines to 35 euros Joy travel. All the drivers (Albanian or greek the don´t speak english, i think you will find some english speakers among the young albanians that they go home). P.S: 1 The number of Albanian Interlines in Tirana 00355 42 235230(got on the internet)P.S.2 I did the round trip with Joy Travel on the way to Tirana there were no problems but on teh way back to Athens The greek drivers are allowed to smoke but not the passengers( i hate smoking) i send an mail to the company but they don´t care.

Avoid unnecessary Ryanair charges

by JohnnyMack

Folks, you know the nice roll-on bag that fits so snugly inside the cabin baggage size limit for American Airlines or BMI ? Well don't be so sure that it'll fit with Ryanair. This is kinda important since Ryanair will probably charge you a minimum of 30 Euro if they take it from you at the gate. Ryanair are clever, they know that if you stuff your roll-on it'll be contained by the sides so that all it can do is puff out and get fat. They limit the "fatness of bag" to 20 CM (as per their website 2010/2/7). I measured Easyjet's and Aer Lingus' carry on at 25 CM, and BMI at 27 CM. So beware, they are fastidious in checking, and an unexpected 30 EURO (or more) charge is a bad way to start a nice vacation.

Driving around Europe

by angiebabe

A lot of my driving has been with using Michelin maps to get around - they tend to point out all the scenic routes in an area which has always great for me in maximising the enjoyment of the routes Ive taken. They also have an excellent website www.viamichelin.com which is extremely handy as well for getting about - especially quick access to distances and ideas for planning routes.

Travelling around Europe

by angiebabe

I was travelling to Morocco frequently for about 3 years and most of the travelling to get there was via southern Spain - Ive also done numerous trips to Spain and included driving into Portugal - most of the visits seeing Spain (and Europe) has been with rental car as I get to see more and at the same time its a way that minimises any concern of how the weather and temperatures are - I have more freedom to deal with however the weather is and can depart and arrive as early or late as I like when I have a car and books to give me options of where to stay so that having to prebook is reduced as well. This has given me many enjoyable hours and days and weeks travelling all over Europe to many sites including especially those off the beathen track. Many people dont do this and prefer to go by public transport but I have always found spending the extra for a car and fuel has not really cost...

skyscanner.net - A great flight resource!

by christineintheworld

There is a really great website that I use to source out inexpensive flights throughout the world... it is called skyscanner.net. The site sources most, if not all, carriers and sites and comes back with the flight options and costs. You cannot book through the site but it is a great one-stop-shop for you to access all of the information, then follow the links (they list the carriers or sites where they found the information) next to the flight and cost. You can choose the currency that it lists the cost. It also includes taxes in its estimates. The other gem is that you can choose exactly which airport you want to fly in and out of, which comes in incredibly handy when you realize that most of the discount carriers fly in and out of the secondary airports (For example, in Barcelona, most discount carriers fly in and out of Girona airport which is over 100 km away versus El Prat which is...
