European Timetable Primer

by travelfrosch

As you might have already discovered, the various European travel sites provide excellent information for your vacation research. Among the more important things you can find online are train, bus, and boat timetables. While these can be very handy, sometimes they're not that easy to read if you don't know what you're looking for. While timetables vary, European schedules usually follow a similar format for days of the week specially designed so the reader does not have to understand the native language. The code is usually a combination of numbers and letters. The translation key is as follows:a single capital letter (usually "D") or blank = dailyx = "excluding"1 = Monday2 = Tuesday3 = Wednesday4 = Thursday5 = Friday6 = Saturday7 = SundaySo for example, "135" would mean Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. In the example from my photo, "D" means daily, "Dx67" means Monday thru Friday...

Finding Local and Regional Train Schedules

by mccalpin

People who buy Interrail and Eurail passes are often surprised to find that they have to pay supplements to ride on all premium trains (those that require reservations). Therefore, these travelers are motivated to ride the local or regional trains to avoid these supplements, which can be as high as 25 euro for a single trip!It can be difficult on most national rail websites to find all the trains that you can ride for "free" with a pass...this is because the websites are geared towards "solutions" not "schedules". So, if there are 20 direct trains a day (all premium trains) between A and B, most of the national websites won't bother listing the fact that you could go from A to B with a change in C and both segments would be on regional trains that require no supplement for the pass. However, the German rail website - www.bahn.de - does provide a way for you to try to plan a trip or trips...

by backpackingjimmy

Hey, glad your planning on heading on tour! I've been travelling for around 2 years and i must say a eurail pass is ok only if you plan on catching a train every day!! Otherwise you might find it better to purchase them as you need them... You will visit some places that even a week isn't long enough (Rome)! If you want any information or advice you can contact me on the website http://www.backpackingescort.net/ where there are lots of reviews, tips and tricks for backpacking in Europe.

Travel from Australia to Europe without flying

by sikky

Get to Darwin in Australia and Perkins Shipping Group Pty operate a barge that runs Darwin-Dili-Singapore (and reverse) 3 times a month. check their website at www.perkins.com.au for schedules and contact details, you would have to ring up and arrange in advance for passage. This is not a luxury boat - it is a freight barge, sorry, I have no idea how much passage would cost. You could take this barge straight to Singapore (takes 13 days) or if you want to stay in East Timor for a while then get off at Dili and you can continue overland by taking a 12 hour bus from Dili to Kupang in Indonesian West Timor (check conditions to see if the border is open) and get on a number of boats leaving Kupang and heading to other Indonesian islands (check www.pelni.in) for routes, timetables and prices).Continue using Pelni ships island hopping your way through Indonesia (and buses on larger islands such...

Fly safely

by csordila

The statistics show, there are six airlines - the Finnair, the Qantas, Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific, the El Al, the Air Berlin and the Japanese All Nippon Airways - where , there has been no accident in the past thirty years. The leading low-cost companies - such as Wizz Air, Ryanair, Air Europa, Easyjet, the Canadian Westjet Airlines and the American JetBlue Airways - operate accident-free since their establishment.Incident counts as accident, when the airplane was totally damaged, and not possible to repair and those which ended with fatal outcome. The 1946-established Malév Hungarian airline has, by the way, Eastern Europe's best in-flight staff, according to a survey by the London-based monitoring company Skytrax.

Let the train take the strain

by gilljay

Hello, a VT member from Australia wrote asking about driving from the UK to France after landing and after a 24 hour flight - think jetlag, strange countries / customs etc...Apart from supporting whole heartedly the comments from other VTers, and I'm not certain that ANY responsible hire company would let you take a car straight away, I just ask this >>if it is your first trip to France why drive at all? Either book a flight direct to Paris and then make best use of a Metro ticket to see the sights or jump on the Eurostar at St Pancras, London and arrive in Paris refreshed and ready to go. Perhaps even split the week between the two cities. There are lots of hotels, some expensive and others not so, but what you save on a hire car could be well spent elsewhere. If Paris isn't your thing then try the TGV direct to Nice and enjoy the scenery and beaches. The season in which you will be...

Train from Bar to Nis or Belgrade

by lodi2

Venelin,I see a slight problem with taking the train from Bar to Belgrade in that the train arrives in Belgrade at 6:13. The train from Belgrade to Istanbul leaves at 7:50, which means that we have very little time to buy our tickets and make it to the train on time, if the train from Bar is late. From what I can see at this end is that the train from Bar to Nis may be the better option, since it arrives in Nis at 8:07, with the train from Nis to istanbul leaving at 12:40, providing more time if the train from Bar is late, which I'm hearing is normal. If my assumption is correct, it is better to take the train from Bar to Nis, please let me know. Also, how can I purchase train tickets (sleeper) for the two trains, especially the train from Bar to Nis or Belgrade in the United States without paying a penalty fee for being out of country? If I am not able to purchase tickets in advance, will...

By train, the transport of the future!

by Mikebond

The best way for you to move within Europe is very likely to be by train. Most European countries have a wide and well functioning rail network, with a high-speed network operating in some states (particularly in France, Belgique-België, Deutschland, España) and under construction or planned in most other states.French TGVs, German ICEs, international Thalys and Eurostar trains move million of passengers every day.Although train is still an underrated means of transport in some countries, such as in Italia and in some Central and Eastern European countries, it represents the future of travelling withing Europe. Cars and planes are polluting, therefore the European Commission and the EU member states are trying to boost the railway transport of people and freight. The website RailfanEurope provides information about trains in all of Europe, including a "Links" section (click on the label on...
