This tip is about an event which happened with us in Simferopol 40 years ago. I wish it couldn't happen now, but...
I have got to Simferopol’ for the first time together with my parents in 1967 when I was 13 years old. We made an automobile trip to the Crimea from Moscow by our "Moscwich-408". We overcame about 1200 kilometers from Moscow to Simferopol’ during 3 days. We stopped for a night in one of hotels of the city. We have remembered this night in Simferopol’ for a long time in connection with an unpleasant incident.
We left our car on a street near the hotel. A watchman knocked in our room at late night and cried, that unknown people were stealing our car! My father jumped outside almost without any clothes and really saw people who tried to roll our car away so that in a secluded place to get into it and to take hold of it. My father with shout ran up to the car. Robbers rushed to run. The car was saved. However they threw a stone in the car. Fortunately it got between doors and even didn't break a glass.
Since then the name of Simferopol' city was connected for us with an attempt (fortunately unsuccessful!) of stealing of our car.

We were already sitting in the minibus that was to take us to Yalta waiting for it fill up with other passengers. We were hugging our daypacks. An old man got on, then two more men which started to make a commotion and distracted the old man and got off again. Sure enough, they managed to steal his money. Consequently, he couldn't pay his fare, he was very upset and went off to the police station.
It happend right next to us and I never realised what was going on. Luckily for us, our big packs were in the back of the minivan securly locked away and the daypacks were held tightly.

Chances are if you stay in one of the big hotels, you might get a phone call soon after checking in or sometime in the evening when you are in your room. It's an older Soviet custom that still lives today - offering the services of a prostitute to travellers. Just politely decline and you won't be bothered again.
