We have thought up a following trap ourselves. It doesn't concern respectable persons...
To kill the time we lodged to play cards. Many people know, that the main Russian card play is a "Preference" (Dostoevsky took a great interest in this game). In our company there were three men. It is quite enough for a game. Usually a game proceeds until players will not collect 30 spots. However in a train we usually play the extended variant until players will not collect 100 spots. In Russian we name this game "sotochka". An usual game proceeds 2-3 hours. We played 9 hours and finished late at night already in darkness!
Be aware of playing cards in a train! Time can not suffice you and it would be necessary to continue the game on a railway station platform!
One more trap waited for us in a train. We have got used that in each train there is a wagon-restaurant. Therefore we were going to have dinner and supper at the restaurant. However in the train "Ivan Turgenev" (Orel’s railways) instead of the restaurant there was a bar in which practically there was no meal, and there were only drinks.
However there was a maiden of easy behavior who snatched out a chair which I was sitting and laid down on a rack of a bar being absolutely drunk. We could hardly managed to have a dinner, but there was nothing to think about a supper!
Be reserved with meal before getting a trip by train to the Crimea!
The first tourist trap on a way to Ukraine waits for you in a train (if you are coming to Simferopol by train). Before passage of the frontier money-changers get the train and suggest to exchange Russian roubles or other currency at "a favorable rate". That day an official rate was 192 Ukrainian grivnas for 1000 Russian roubles (5,1 grivnas for $1). They offered the exchange of 170 grivnas for 1000 roubles in a train. They explained, that exchange offices in Simferopol were closed in the morning, and in christmas days they wouldn't work. We have not believed. And we were right!
We came to the railway station in Simferopol at 7.30. In working exchange office at the station we saw a rate of 175 grivnas! We went away from the station 200 meters and saw a rate 180 grivnas! We walked up to the city centre and made an exchange 188 grivnas for 1000 roubles. Do not change money in a train and at the railway station!
By the way in the Yalta hotel the rate was 185 grivnas for 1000 roubles.
I came to this Hotel only because it was the nearest one to me, right in the center of Simferopol....more
