    Bohdan Hmelnitsky garden

Favorite thing: If you drive 180 km south from Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, you reach a magical green town, Cherkassy, located right on the banks of the huge reservoir. Life is different here. People are very friendly and have time to smile at you and answer any questions you may have. And you"ll be surprised at the very low prices in the local stores and hotels.

Today, Cherkassy is a peaceful town of farmers and small factories. However, during the first 400 years after its "birth" as a fortress, Cherkassy was a frontier town in the fight against Poland"s influence. Also, this town is known for being the place where, in 1648, the legendary commander Bohdan Hmelnitsky wrote his letter to the Russian tsar, seeking to unite with Russia.

    Popular's district

Favorite thing: In the outskirts of the city, of numerous small houses, year more or less good state, around streets that are not more of them sometimes. As soon as one moves away of the big frequented axes, the tar of the roads can be only a vagueness memory. Of the doors, in the palisades give on other alleys, in the pâté of houses surrounded with gardens. Here, it is another face of Ukraine that one discovers...

    News districs

    by Klod5 Written Apr 17, 2003
Cherkasy - News districts near the Dniepr

Favorite thing: The transition from the Soviet period has brought serious new problems. Much of the old elite (nomenklatura) has weathered the transition well. Many Soviet-era managers and factory directors retained their positions and profited from privatization. Highly placed members of the Communist Party hierarchy and security apparatus moved into business, often of a dubious kind. A thin stratum of new rich has begun to appear.
For the vast majority of the population, however, the transition has meant a catastrophic decline in living standards. Since 1991 the average standard of living has declined by 80 percent. An estimated 45 percent of the population, especially the elderly, now lives below the poverty level. Unemployment is growing, and health care is deteriorating.

Fondest memory: Life expectancy of males has dropped from 65 to 58 years. Ecological disasters, poor diet, and other factors have lowered resistance to diseases. Epidemics of diphtheria, cholera, and hepatitis have been frequent in recent years. A tragic consequence of the Chernobyl' explosion has been a large increase in thyroid cancer in children.
Crime and especially corruption is rampant, with much economic activity controlled by "mafia" clans based in industrial centers such as Donets'ka, Dnipropetrovs'k, and Crimea. The influence of organized crime often reaches into the highest levels of government.

    2.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

    Plochtchad Slavi

Favorite thing: Plochtchad Slavi is one of the quarter residential modern of Cherkasy. It has been constructed, on the strands of the stream in the first years of the independence, about ten years ago.

Fondest memory: Family's life suffers from the lack of lodgings. When Ukraine was part of the soviet union again, the more part of the lodgings belonged to the State, that was also in charge of their interview. The rents were inexpensive. Now, nor the State nor the workers don't have the necessary money to maintain the lodgings. The houses and the buildings are old and have need of renovations.

Although the system is reconsidered currently, it is going to be necessary numerous years so that the Ukrainians can get decent lodgings to an affordable price. While waiting, the families have the tendency to live heaped one on the other already too much in houses and apartments
