Favorite thing: The main square of Chernihiv is called Red Square (Krasna Ploscha). It is a large cobbled square with the Chernihiv theatre in the middle of the East side.

The southern side offers a spectacular view through the Alley of Heroes to the golden-domed St. Catherine’s Church. The northern side is the beginning of Chernihiv's shopping streets.

Taras Shevchenko Monument on the ramparts
    1 more image

Favorite thing: The Ramparts which are also called the Val are Chernihiv's most ancient part. It is the former territory of the Prince's palace and fortresss. There are still twelve wrought iron Kozak canons from the 17th century.

Nowadays the area has been turned into a lovely park where you can take a stroll and enjoy the views of the Desna river. As in almost every Ukrainian city a monument to the poet Taras Shevchenko can be found in this park as well.

    Name of the city

by Listig Written Oct 15, 2002

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: Many legends and ballads are connected with the city. According to one of them, Chernihiv owes its name to the thick, dark forests ('chorny' means black in Ukrainian) surrounding it in olden times. Another version has it that the city was named after its legendary founder, Prince Chorny and his daughter Cherne. Quite remarkably, the prince's grave is preserve'd.
