Miscellaneous: Like many other countries in Eastern Europe, the Ukraine is a rapidly developing country.

Unfortunately, it is often difficult to find a Tourist Information Office or just a free map, therefore an up to date guide book for independent travellers is highly recommended.

Here are 3 travel guides, which we used during our recent trips to the Ukraine:

On our first trip in 2007 we used the Bradt travel guide - Ukraine which covers all sorts of information from historical background and descriptions of the sights to practical information about public transportation, accomodation and restaurants.

In 2008 we used the new German travel guide Reise Know-How - Ukraine, der Westen which was just translated from the Polish version. Unfortunately it is not available in English.

Another really helpful travel guide is Die Ukraine entdecken - Trescher. Also this book is, to my knowledge, only available in German, but regarding descriptions of the sights it is the most comprehensive.

Miscellaneous: I was really surprised about the wide variety of free maps and brochures in the Tourist Information Centre of Chernivtsi. They even had some free of charge high-gloss brochures available.

Apart from that, they sell all sorts of souvenirs as well as several guidebooks and DVDs in various languages.

The Tourist Information Centre is located near the northern end of the Holovna street.

Address: Tourist Information Centre, Holovna 16, Chernivtsi

Luggage and bags: `Uk-RAIN-e lives fully up to its name, it is the only country in the world which contains in its English denomination the word RAIN - and I found on my five trips to this country that this is fully justified. Excellent protection against frequent rain is a must!

    Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Umbrella, raincoat.
