Mini Bus & Tram
  • Tip Rating:
  • The best way to get around the city is by micro-bus (minibus). Wherever you travel to and from costs only 1 grivnah per bus. Getting on of course is no problem so long as you know the numbers of the buses going to your destination. You just wave one down. Getting off is easier if you can shout "stop" (in Russian / Ukrainian) to the driver. However it is easy enough to make your intention to exit the bus when you have reached the place you want to be by other means. Trams cost 50 kopeks and you simply get on and get off at their specified tram stops. Beware of the trolley buses - especially when busy - they are notorious for pick-pockets. The trams and trolleys buses however do not have the variety and diversity of route as the micro-buses do. Then of course there are taxi's. Not too expensive if you know how to haggle, but there's a great difference between a journey that might only cost a grivnah or two to a taxi that on average would cost 20 Grivnah!! Your choice. Good luck. Enjoy.

From the railway station you can take a tram to downtown along Karl Marx street. You buy the ticket from the conductor. For a lot of destinations it's more convenient to take a marshrutka (mini bus) but then you will have to be able to speak some Russian or Ukrainian otherwise it's too difficult unless you have a knowledgable guide with you.

In summer there is also an old open summer tram that takes people for a tour.

You can take a fun trip on Dnepr river. It's a small cruise where you can enjoy the wind in your hair and relax and view the city from the river. I don't remember the price. The boat jetty is near Hotel Dnipropetrovsk.

    Trains and planes
There are now 2 fast trains running Kiev-DNK and vice versa (one early morning, one late afternoon) and also one morning train DNK to Simferopol (Crimea). 2nd class costs around 15 Euros one way. 2nd class is comfortable on these trains (in my opnion better than 1st class). Airplane-type seating. Travel time a little less than 6 hours. The night train ("Dnepro") costs around 15 Euros for one bed in 2nd class (Kupe, 4 beds) and 50 Euros for one bed in 1st class (SV, 2 beds).
AeroSvit has a flight Kiev Boryspil-DNK.
