    Bountiful Fountains

Favorite thing: I found the many fountains along the main street in Donetsk delightful. Something completed unexpected as we had heard nothing but "yawn" stories about Donetsk. While the fountains were not quaint like those in Provence, these muscular fountains were a good show.

    The Town that Coal Built

by Roadquill Written Dec 10, 2012

    Tailings from the Coal Mines

Favorite thing: The city was effectively started when an entrepruener named John Hughes acquired the rights to build a steel plant in 1869. As the area was full of coal, there was a source of the heat necessary to form iron and create steel. Prior to that it was basically a hiding place for Cossacks. As you enter the city there are huge mounds of tailings from the coal mines. The locals often went out and found old mines to acquire their own coal for their needs. Unfortunately, the mines were not exactly safe and many a miner are missing.
