Lots of poems and songs, folk dances performed at the stage...

I liked and still remember this wonderful poem written by our fellow countryman Volodymyr Sosyura who was born in Luhansk region.
    You might like it, too:

    *** LOVE UKRAINE ***
    by Volodymyr Sosyura

    Love Ukraine, love it like the sun;
Like the wind, and grass and water?
In the hour of happiness and in time of joy,
Love it in the hour of misfortune.

    Love Ukraine in your dream
    And when you are awake,
    Your cherry-like Ukraine.
Its beauty, eternally live and new,
And its tongue like that of the nightingale.

    Among the brotherly peoples,
    Like a flourishing orchard
    She is shining for centuries.
Love Ukraine with all your hearts
    And with all your deeds.

For us she is unique in the world,
Only one in the sweet charm of spaces?
She is in the stars, in the birch
    And in every pulse of the heart;

She is in the flower and bird,
    In the electric fires,
In every song, in every thought,
In the child?s smile, in the girls? eyes,
And in the reddish fluttering of banners?

As the fire burns but never burns out,
She lives in the paths and meadows,
    In the whistling of sirens,
And the waves of the Dnieper,
And in the fiery red clouds.

    In the fire of cannonades
    That crushed to death
The invading foreigners in green uniforms,
In the bayonets that in the darkness
    pierced our way
To the springs, glorious and sincere.

Young man! Give her your smile,
Your tears and all you have?
    You cannot love other people
If you do not love Ukraine.

Young girl! Like its blue sky
    Love her every minute.
Your boy-friend will not love you
If you do not love Ukraine.

Love her in work, in love and in battle,
Like a song that sails with the star?
With all your heart love your Ukraine,
And we will be eternal along with her.

I have found some nice words about the Ukrainians.
This is what a Canadian historian James F.Coughlin wrote about Ukrainians:
As colonizers in different parts of the world, the Ukrainians are showing their desirable qualities. They readily take to their new lands, ever improving and extending, and try to maintain a peaceful attitude and a high standard with all other nationalities. They possess strong and robust physiques, which adapt them to any geographical location. They are also gifted with large families and a patriotic fervor, which ensure the perpetuation of their race, ideals and culture.

Customs of people in Carpathian area
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pirogovo – museum under open sky near Kiev.

Many families in Carpathian mountains lived apart and very far from each other. Sometimes the distance was some miles. For being safe and not to allow others to get inside house, the owners built building such way that they form a square with large yard inside. There was no window outside. Life was only inside of private territory and all doors were closed. Family lived by own life without knowing what happened in the world outside. Only on some holidays and after autumn they went to trade fairs (“yarmarok”) to find out news and “to show themselves”.

Inside of Ukrainian house (XIX century).
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pirogovo – museum under open sky near Kiev.

Particular features of the houses' inside : bench along wall, big table around what family ate, icons covered with embroidered towels (“rushnyky”), spinning-wheel, big wood trunk and stove. Close to the ceiling different herbs hang.

    Houses in Carpathian mountains
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pirogovo – museum under open sky near Kiev.

West Ukrainian houses were and are different from other areas. it was hard to build houses in Carpathian mountains, so every building was apart from each other. The roofs of houses were going almost to the ground (I guess because of rainy weather).

  • Tip Rating:
  • Pirogovo – museum under open sky near Kiev.

When son get married to girl, new family built another part of house for themselves, so house was divided on parts for every family, but at the same time the house was one. In some regions houses was divided on living part and part for home animals.

    Visa News
  • Tip Rating:
  • Citizens of EU countries, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, the US, Canada, Japan and South Korea can enter Ukraine without a visa for up to 90 days upon displaying their international passport. Ukraine also maintains a visa free regime with all CIS countries with the exception of Turkmenistan.

In June 2009 Ukraine will sign a road map with the EU which will outline the steps Ukraine needs to take in order to achieve visa free travel for its citizens to the EU. The process will optimistically take 3-4 years.

    Where to Go First
  • Tip Rating:
  • First of all I would take you to Khreshchatyk, the Ukrainian capital's central street and from there to the Dnipro embankment located on the hills.
There is a beautiful view of the city from there.

Visiting Crimea and walking in the Crimean Mountains and in the cities on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula.

    Another Amazing Structure
  • Tip Rating:
  • I really have a fascination with such religious structures, and my favorite maybe is the Guardian Angel Church--I am not sure the formal name of it. I hope to tour all that I can this coming spring in Ukraine and visit these wonderful places again firsthand.
