Ukrainian history

by Klod5

Ukraine was the center of the first Slavic state, Kyivan Rus, which during the 10th and 11th centuries was the largest and most powerful state in Europe. Weakened by internecine quarrels and Mongol invasions, Kyivan Rus was incorporated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and eventually into the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The cultural and religious legacy of Kyivan Rus laid the foundation for Ukrainian nationalism through subsequent centuries. A new Ukrainian state, the Cossack Hetmanate, was established during the mid-17th century after an uprising agaist the Poles. Despite continuous Muscovite pressure, the Hetmanate managed to remain autonomous for well over 100 years. During the latter part of the 18th century, most Ukrainian ethnographic territory was absorbed by the Russian Empire. Following the collapse of czarist Russia in 1917, Ukraine was able to bring about a short-lived...

Mass deportation of Crimean Tata

by Klod5

Ceremonies in the Crimea's capital, Simpferopol, marking the 56th anniversary of the Stalin era mass deportation of more than 200,000 Crimean Tatars to Soviet Central Asia. Since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union an estimated quarter million Tatars and their descendants have returned to the Crimean peninsula – their historic homeland – which today is part of Ukraine. They have often come back to nothing. Between May 18 and May 20, 1944, the Crimea's entire Tatar population was herded up by Stalin's security forces, after being accused by Stalinist propaganda of siding with the Nazis. They were crammed into cargo trains and sent to Central Asia. Thousands perished during the long trip in overcrowded railcars without adequate food and water. At the time of the deportation, the Tatars were Soviet citizens and the Crimea was part of the Russian Soviet Republic. When they started coming...

Another Amazing Structure

by grishaV1

I really have a fascination with such religious structures, and my favorite maybe is the Guardian Angel Church--I am not sure the formal name of it. I hope to tour all that I can this coming spring in Ukraine and visit these wonderful places again firsthand.

Look Up To See the Domes

by grishaV1

Ukraine is a country with very many churches and cathedrals. Most have the typical domed structure in the orthodox style. Especially in the city of Kyiv, nearly every place you can look to on the hills have some church. One of the most famous is St. Andrews Church. It was built at the request of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna in 1748. It sits on Starokyivskaya Hill overlooking the Podol district. Very grand and beautiful on the inside and out, it was made a historical monument in 1968 so that it could be specially preserved as long as possible. This is old black and white photo of.

Meet the People!

by klarson

I encourage you to just meet people while visiting Ukraine. Many of them are very hospitable, and they love to dialogue with westerners. One of the things I enjoyed the most was just talking to the people. They are so interested in things we take for granted, like facts about America, etc. There was a woman named Margarita who was a member of the church that we worked with in Mukachevo. She invited us to her place several times and served us delicious meals. She did not speak English, so she had her friend, who is an English teacher, translate for her. I really enjoyed getting to know Margarita and her friend.

Visit Odessa, 'the pearl at the seaside', as it is said in one of the songs. The city is really unique - it's coloring can't be compared to anything. All people look friendly and happy, though many of them live a difficult life. Have a stroll along Deribasovskaya Street, the main street of Odessa - it's a real pleasure. Most of all I enjoy the view of famous Potemkinskaya Staircase from the seaport. Two times I started my Mediterranean cruise from this port, I enjoy the atmosphere of boarding, waving farewell to Odessa from the ship...

Visit one of the resorts of the Crimea peninsula . After the breakdown of the USSR we (I mean the Russians) lost one of the most favourite, picturesque and health-giving regions - the Crimea. It has always been a paradise for tourists all over the USSR owing to favourable climate and the Black sea . Besides, it is the area of great historic and architectural interest - you may take part in plenty of sightseeing tours! I recommend to visit Yalta (the place of scenic beauty, the mountainous area of the Crimea) and Evpatoria (very flat steppe area famous for its healing mud and lakes with medicinal salt). What is notable, the Crimea used to be the Russian territory: in the XVIII century Russian tsarina Catherine II joined it to Russia by a special decree. Later, in the course of Soviet power somebody presented it to the Ukraine.

by Vitalia

Arcadia is the most developed beach in Odessa. It looks gorgeous in summer – plenty of flowers, shady trees, numerous restaurants and cafes with tidy sea view terraces. Being a little bit pricey, they are really good for drinks and snacks.Besides swimming and sunbathing, you can rent paddleboats, rowboats and other sailing vehicles for moderate prices.
