This is the main library of Kherson region, the largest literary warehouse, depository of editions of Kherson writers and printed editions, one of the most important cultural centres of the region. The foundation of the library was possible due to the efforts of the progressive intelligency of the city. In 1872 the library gathered its first visitors, some time later it began to get the grants from the municipal government.
Nowadays the library and the warehouse are placed in the big building standing on the picturesque bank of the river Dnieper near the Park of Glory.
Every year more than 40 000 of Kherson people, regional inhabitants and guests of the city visit this library with its friendly stuff always get ready to help.
Kherson Museum of Art that bears a name of the famous Ukrainian figure of art O.Shovkunenko, plays the important role among other museums of Ukraine.
The Museum is placed in the real pearl of architecture art - in the building of former Municipal Council. Its opening was devoted to the 200th anniversary of Kherson in 1978.
The art collection began to be completed on the boundary of XIX and XX centuries.
Today the main fund of the Museum numbers 7 000 of exhibits, among them paintings, graphic and applied arts. Besides the Museum collection, the collections from foreign museums are systematically exhibited.
Masterpieces of V. Perov, V. Polenov, I. Repin, I. Shishkin, V Makovsky, I Ayvazovsky, M. Pimonenko, M Kuznetsov, icons of M. Shibanov will surely fascinate you. And the collection of masterpieces in 150 exhibits of great O. Shovkunenko, presented to the museum by his wife, won't leave you indifferent.
You have been already informed that Kherson glorious history begins from times immemorial. The culture of the land first of all is characterized by unusual variety that can be explained by the variety of the ethnic structure of the population. Ancient tribes have left great number of memorials, that came through the centuries and now are almost invaluable. Some of these samples today are displayed in the Kherson Museum of Local Lore. This museum is the oldest one in Kherson, beeing found in 1890 by the well-known archaeologist V. Gotskevich on basis of his collection. That's why the Museum was considered to be Archaeological for the first time, but later the collection was extended and enriched. Nowadays the main fund of the Museum makes 144 000 of specimens.
Among the exhibits we can see the stone sculpture, jewelry products, ceramics, monuments and other samples of fine arts of the Scythian age, Medieval age of Asia invasion, age of Kozaks, memorials from ancient Greek city of Olvia and other interesting specimens found on the Kherson land.
Kherson people prefer to combine work with the rest and entertainment, they have opportunity to visit theatres: Drama Theatre named on behalf of M. Kulish, the Puppet Theatre, which are waiting for their on-lookers. The youth of the city considers the cinema "Ukraine", having been equipped to the latest standard with the digital dolby surround sound, to be the most popular in the city. Night clubs are also of great popularity among the youth, they were opened in all the districts of the city, but mostly in the centre( "Disco 2000", "McDuck ", "Millenium" and others)
In 1992, 13,149 people left the Ukraine for Israel, which constituted 21.6% of the entire aliyah from the former U.S.S.R. in this year; and 12,833 left the country in 1993, which constituted 21.2% of all immigrants to Israel from the former U.S.S.R. in that year. Whereas there was a drop in numbers of immigrants from Kiev, who claimed themselves Jewish, from 3,456 in 1992 to 2,292 in 1993, there was a rise of immigrants from Donetsk region.
In 1992, 20,363 Jews left the Ukraine for the U.S. but only 13,216 in 1993.
