  • I went to Kherson from Odessa : 225 km (three hours' drive by taxi).
    If you hire a taxi in Odessa, It will cost you 500 UAH (about $100).
    You can take a train ($10 in a compartment), 7 hours to get there,
    By bus it's 5 hours' drive.

  • The best way to get Kherson in summer is by air to Odessa and than by ship. In such case you have a chance to see very very beautiful places.
    Also possible to travel by road from Odessa or Kiev. Price of taxi from Odessa is from USD 50 to USD 150 subject to your negotiation skills :). Bus from Odessa will cost you about USD 6-7.

  • I flew into Kiev and drove 8 hours to get to Kherson, It would be better to fly into Odessa, then drive 2 hours. I took the night train back to Kiev. I boarded at about 9 pm, and arrived the next morning around 10:30, first time I was ever on a train, it was pretty cool. Very small cabin for 4, you have to pay the cabin boy a few hrevnafor the linens, but it was nothing, I just didnt understand what I was suppose to do and I dont speak Russian. The Crimea is just to the South of Kherson, I spent a day in Sevastopol about a 6 hour drive. Wish I had more time to spend there.

  • In my research before my trip to Kherson I had found widely varying reports on how to get there from Odessa, so I thought I'd report on my experience.

    My original plan was to take a cab at the airport to Odessa's bus station, and then take a bus to Kherson. Bus schedules are available on the internet, and it seemed like a nice and cheap plan.

    Inside Odessa airport there are absolutely no signs nor information about buses or cabs, which means you need to step out and face the crowd of people waiting outside the airport hall to sell you something (mostly cab rides, luckily enough). It is a challenging experience to negociate your fare without speaking a word of Russian with ten different cab drivers at the same time. The Lonely Planet Guide reported that a taxi ride to downtown Odessa was 15-30$, so I was surprised when a driver offered to drive me all the way to Kherson for 100$. After some negotiation we agreed on a 70 euros fare, which seemed reasonable for a 4 hour ride in a 1980's Volga coming straight out of a Russian gangster movie:)

    On my way back I paid 300 grivnas to a Kherson cab driver, which I believe makes around 50-60 euros.

    So the bottom line is if you are not on a tight budget, go there by taxi;
