Cover from 'The Days of the Turbins' by Bobek Although this tip is not strictly Kiev-related, I guess most of you visitors to the city will enjoy finding it here, as it is on those pieces of art that are unknown to most of us, including me when I came to Kiev for the first time. (text removed)

I have walked around this monument for a couple of times but never understood the meaning of it until I was explained that the figures here have nothing in common, are no family or decendants of "Olga" but are essential historical individuals with a particular meaning for either the city of Kiev or the Slavic people. Votes and protests in 2004 presidential election by Bobek Many of us have been witnesses of the awareness of the people of Kiev (and Ukraine) sensing there is one more change to come after the declaration of independence of Ukraine in 1991 and the fall of the former USSR. On 22 Nov 2004, in an act of civil disobedience students of the Shevchenko University in Kiev stood up for integrity in the voting process after there had been evidence that the presidential elections had been massively manipulated. More and more citizens joined in. (text removed)

It is very difficult for westerners to understand the general "survival" system of Ukrainians in terms of income and living. Even though I have tried very hard to understand how people make their living this still remains a mystery to me. (text removed)

Cutout of screenshot from Kiev streetmap by Bobek Obviously good street maps about Kiev are hard to get, even if you search the internet you might spend hours to find something useful. I was lucky to find a precise and readable interactive map (Latin or Cyrillic letters) that really goes down to naming of the streets and house numbers. And here is the link: Kiev Online Map (text removed) Leave a Comment

Performance in the National Taras Shevchenko Opera by Bobek Ukrainians and Russians tend to value all kinds of cultural events very high. But this is not restricted to serious classical or traditional themes. The range spans from opera, ballet, rock and folklore concerts to experimental drama, professional puppet theatre, improvisation, comedy and more. I also noticed that Ukrainians and Russians are very well read in serious literature and even take interest in original versions of foreign literature if they only slightly know the language. With this tip I focus on theatrical and musical arts only. This is not a closed list but will be complemented whenever I find a new clue and can give a brief description. (text removed)
