    It is very difficult for westerners to understand the general "survival" system of Ukrainians in terms of income and living. Even though I have tried very hard to understand how people make their living this still remains a mystery to me.

    Maidan Nezalezhnosti is the symbol of Ukrainian Independance. The monumnt was open in 1991. In previous times here was forest. In XVIII the city walls were built here and only in 30-s of XIX century the first houses were built in the area. In 1922, in Soviet Unoion times, the square has a name of Karl Marx and there was a monument to the revolution symbol. In 1976-1977 the square was reconstructed and had a name of October Revolution.

    The Cathedral is situated on Schevchenko Boulevard, not far from Kreschatik Street. The cathedral was built in 1862-1882 in Russian-Byzantine pseudostyle by several architects. Interior was painted some later, in 1895-1896 by such famous painters as Vasnetzov, Nesterov and Vrubel' as well as Ukrainian and Polish painters.

    The cathdral was built in 1108-1113 by order of Jaroslav Mudryi's grandson, Svyatopolk Izyaslavich. Walls were decorated with frescos and mosaics. Unfortunately cathedral was destroyed in 1934-1935, although some details were kept in Moscow and Leningrad (St.Petersburg). In 1999 the cathedral was built in the same place.     In the square in front of St.Sophia Cathedral there is a monument to Bogdan Khmel'nitsky. He was a leader of Ukrainian troops in the war in XVII century for independence from Rech Pospolitaya (Poland and Lithuania) as well as from Turkish influence. The war began in 1648. After some pieceful periods the war began again and again. Unfortunately Ukrainian troops lost fights by fights and asked Russia to help. In the end of 1653 the governemnt of Russia decided to begin war against Poland. Since January 8, 1654 it was a so-named reunification of Russian and Ukrainian people and Ukraine was a part of Russian Empire till 1991.

    Dnepr River divides the city in two parts and make the wonderful paths of flowing water. Dnepr is one of the longest rier of Europe. In the area near of Kiev the river forms some river basins. It is very popular among local citizens to get a rest there. For example, there are beaches exactly in the centre of the city. Some wonderful views of Dnepr River as well as the city, you may enjoy from the pedestrian bridge near of Khreshaty Park.
    Area in 40 km from the city with the big river basin has a name "Kiev Sea" :-))

    ... that Kievians are eating caviar each and every day. Caviar is a delicacy in Ukraine, too, and may eventually be served when foreign guests are invited or as a gift to take it home for them. Yet you will most probably not get any second rated sort like in the supermarkets in the west. This will be the delicacy that you expect it to be. Definitely!

    Palae was built in 1750-1755 for Razumovsky Duke. In the same time the park (Mariinsky) was installed. The palace was reconstructed several times (last one in 1870). Till revolution it was a residence for Tsar family. During WWII the palace was destroyed but then reconstructed. Now it is a residence of Ukrainian president.
