It's advisable that you take all important belongings in your carry-on bag. It will help in case your luggage is lost in the airport or on a train. Pack passport, tickets, itineraries, money, wallets and insurance cars in your carry-on bag.

If you're arriving in winter note -5-+5C,
    in spring: +5-+20C,
    summer: +18-+32C,
    autumn: +23C-+7C in November :-)

If you are taking shampoos, soaps, laundry kits, shaving creams and other things like that, take travel size products. Note also that such products can be purchased in Ukrainian stores or markets.

Are you digitalized already ?!! battteries, CDs, i-net cafes are easily available, and the rates are better 1.5-2 times then in other places; the same - for photo-prints! Wish you excellent sunny weather! :)

    It certainly depends :)

Obviously you check your documents, visas, money and other important things prior to leaving home. Bring a good mood and positive curiosity :) and enjoy your travelling!!!

    Two excellent Kiev and Ukraine
    guides

Regarding good guide books about Kiev or Ukraine I have two recommendations.

Scheer and Schmidt: Die Ukraine entdecken
    Trescher Verlag, Berlin
    ISBN 3-928409-68-9

For Engish speaking tourists I strongly recommend another one. It is available in ENGLISH or in GERMAN and has obviously been produced with absolute commitment and affinity for the detail. This second lovely book has everything you ever wished to find: many detailed maps, lots of photos and illustrations, comprehensive texts about history, food, sightseeing, accommodation, entertainment and so on. It is excellently designed, of superb paper and printing quality and in consequence absolutely well done. Yet the highlight is that the publisher is a company from Kiev. So buying this book will also contribute a bit to the prosperity of this amazing city.

The book has been published by Baltia Druk, Kiev and is 7 EUROs (plus shipment). It can be ordered directly from baltija@ukr.net.

    Visa for Ukraine
    by Bobek
From 1st July 2005 on citizens of the US are allowed to enter Ukraine for 90 days within half a year without visa. This applies for tourists only (compare Decree # 1008/2005).

According to Decree # 1107/2005 this is very similar for Japanese citizens who may enter without visa starting from 1st August 2005.

There is a temporary simplification for the entry of tourists with EU or Swiss citizenship for the period of 1st May 2005 until 1st August 2005. No visa are required for this period. For these nationals a health insurance policy must be available with either AXA or Hansa Merkur insurance company. For the period of visa-free entry any other health insurance company is accepted.

Now citizens from Poland, Hungary, Lithuania, Moldavia, Mongolia, the USA, Japan and the States of the former USSR (except Turkmenistan) do not need tourist visa any longer.

For details compare the embassy' s web page.

In Ukraine we have 4 full seasons: winter (the longest one), spring, summer and fall. But winter can find u any time, despite on a season. Its change very often and unexpectedly. So you better take some warm clothers with you and umbrella when u travel to ukraine any time of a year.

Kiev has a moderate continental climate with the average January temperature of 21 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degrees below zero centigrade) and the average July temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees centigrade).
Summers are warm, but in spite of warm or hot days, the nights can be cool.
Winters have been warm of late with temperatures above zero on many winter days including New Year’s Day and Christmas.
So we began to think if it’s time for us to dream of white Christmas together with our friends in Western Europe.

    Welcome to Ukraine!

The standard voltage in Ukraine is 220 volts. If you bring your electric appliances with you and want to use them effectively and without any risk, don’t forget to take all kinds of adapters and protectors to keep your costly devices from damage.

One of the favorite holidays of the residents and visitors of Kiev is the City Day, or Days of Kiev, that are celebrated on the last weekend of May when all the central city streets turn into a vast stage and fair grounds. This festival attracts a lot of people from all over Ukraine and from abroad and is broadcast on many TV channels. Unlike Kiev, many other Ukrainian cities I know celebrate their City Days in September as, say, Luhansk that celebrates its City Days on the second weekend in September.

  • Warm clothing. Kiev is nearly always freezing cold.

In short supply and not up to western standards, taking your own toiletries is to your advantage. Leave them for the maids at your hotel when you are checking out, it will be greatly appreciated.

    You are joking.

  • If yopu travel in winter - it is better to have something really warm - sometimes it can be -20C - 30C, but not often. Be aware of snow in winter. Also, it often happens that after cold weather, warm weather is comming. It is not the best times in Kiev - too wet.
In summer, the weather changes - rain and sun. Usually it is not cold. In august can be really hot, up to 35 C. May is usually sunny and warm.
Shoes should be comfortable for walking as well as your clothes. But I guess you all know this.

If you will be cold, you can drink vodka to get warm. But not too much.
