For many of us this old prejudice may apply, as we still have in mind those pictures from the cold war past, those from poor soldiers after the war, wearing shaggy clothes that hardly fit. We also often still believe in the stories that have been told when we were younger that in the east there is hardly anything one can buy, etc, etc. Once again, these days have passed. Compared to old times this is dreamland now.

  • Tip Rating:
  • The inner spaces are divided in quarters, and there are the gift quarter, the clothes and shoes quarter, the sport quarter, the book quarter, the boutique quarter, the service quarter, the furniture quarter, etc.
The thematic grouping of the stores saves customers' time and provides pleasant impression of attentive care to each guest.

The 12th Quarter is ideal for those who are not quite sure what they exactly need. The stores in this quarter are arranged according to the geographical location.

So far there are 6 zones that correspond to Turkey, Italia, France, Poland, Germany and Ukraine. Accademia, Axiom, Biblos, Cerutti, Falconi, Dolce Vita, RoccoBarocco, Valentini, Sportstaff, Teddi, Lucas, Lincolor, Susan Small, Nemo represent Italy; Laboratoiers Sarbec, Jacomo, Faust, Seven, Bernard Florentin, Paco Rabane, 100% Femini, Cop Copin are the leading stores of France; Triumph, Dim-Dim, Northland, Happy Rain, Dallas, Apella, Romanson remind of Germany.

The simple enumeration of stores housed in the Metrograd shopping center would make the extensive list, so we would name only some of them. The gifts and souvenirs you can find in Monte Cristo boutique, Derby, Kangol Satlia, Konstantino, Paris Beaute, Seiko Clock. Fabiani, Madoc, Massimo, Piacenza, Promise and other stores welcome you to choose from the great assortment of clothes and shoes that caters for different tastes and styles. The aim of bright and attractive shopping areas of the Children Quarter is to make the fashion-conscious kids look cooler and to make the life of their parents easier. The best brands, including Paco Rabanne, Pich & Gana, Para Solo, and others, offer a great range of clothes, from smart to street wear, toys and accessories for kids of all ages. Besides, there is a playroom with a great number of toys and attractions. Sport clothes and equipment for active rest you'll find in the Sport Quarter, where the Lotto, Medisana, Station One, Intersport and Stayer are gathered. If you don't want to spend extra money, don't even enter the Boutique Quarter, which enchants the visitors with the splendor of the top world brands. .

I have split my report on the Bessarabian Market (or Bessarabka Rinok) into two sections. This one is about the "sales feeling" and the part on the historic background of the place can be found in the "Things-To-Do" category. Now let's focus on the impressions inside the building.

    MegaMarket: Supermarkets
  • Tip Rating:
  • The inestimable advantage of any supermarket is a convenience of many departments gathered under one roof that allows you to save your precious time and buy all products you need at once.

Walk around the historical center of Kiev and explore the entire area, as there is much to take in. Like most capital cities of the world, Kiev has lots of the world's top shops and brand names. The best of Kiev shopping, from the grand shopping centers offering a fabulous selection of goods to nice niche shops selling almost everything, is concentrated in the heart of the city. It is truly a shopper's paradise and a major hub of activity in the Ukrainian capital.

So far there are about 50 supermarkets in Kiev, among which one should mention Billa, Furshet, MegaMarket and Silpo

Petrovka (Black Market): What to get where?

I have found here in VT that "Petrovka" has been declared to be a black market. This may be correct for some corners of the market, yet this also implies that such conditions are kind of typical for Ukraine as a whole. This association is certainly not true. I must underline that folks over there are striving hard for their survival and work their bones to get along for very little money. After a short period of economical anarchy in the early 90ies when the former USSR collapsed there was an atmosphere like during the American gold rush era. Some individuals have become extremely rich and influencial and have eventually also taken advantage politically. But the absolute vast majority of the Ukrainian people is honest and hard-working. Or they may be jobless due to still unsolved socio-economic problems, yet they are no thieves or criminals in general. This is not their nature. We should clearly refrain from these silly simplifications and prejudices. That is what I dislike in finding Petriva being reputed to be a "black market".

If I am mistaken, any feedback from insiders or locals is highly appreciated with me.

Now, if you like to know where to buy the product that you desire, check out my travelogue on ' Market Scenes' or read the shopping tips given...

Many tourists, leaving Ukraine, take as souvenirs bottles of vodka and gorilka, which is a Ukrainian variant of vodka. That is quite logical, as these strong drinks have been always treated as well-known symbols of Slavonic culture. Nowadays you can buy high-quality beverages in many department stores, shopping centers, grocery and liquor stores of Kiev

    Gift Shops: Gift Shops
  • Tip Rating:
  • Today the Ukrainian capital boasts a plenty of souvenir and gift shops, most of which are naturally situated in the center of Kiev, in Shevchenka Boulevard, Kreschatik Street, Krasnoarmeyskaya Street and other places of tourist attention. One of the most popular places to buy souvenirs is Andreevsky Spusk, where you are sure to find something to your taste. Either a hand-made traditional article or soviet memorabilia will remind you of visiting generous and hospitable Ukraine.

Supermarkets (Furshet, Velyka Kyshenia, etc.): some tips from a local connaisseur
  • Tip Rating:
  • if you are looking to bring back some local food or dring, the best way is to go to western-type of supermarket chains like Fourshet (literal translation- stand-up party) or Velyka Keshenya (the Big Pocket). it's convient, you can take your time and wonder around, plus the quality is always good.

when I travel, I usually take:

Ukrainian Chocolates: you will be pleasantly surprised by the quality and abundance of local chocolates. it's my personal (may be a bit biased) opinion but I think the quality of chocolates here is extremely good. they are may be not as well-known as Swiss or Belgian, but I can assure you, you or your friends won't be disappointed. Look for Ukrainian brands like: ROSHEN, Svitoch, AVK. My favorites are Vechirniy Kyiv (Kyiv at Night), Strila (Arrow) or Stozhary (Torches) (chocolate boxes) or any milk/dark chocolate bars.

Ukrainian Brandy: if you like brandy (aka cognac), look for local brandy produced in Uzhhorod
(Uzhhorod Cognac Plant) - Tysa (name of the river in Trascarpatia) and Karpaty (Carpathians). the second one is also available with souvenir brandy glasses.

Ukrainian Horilka (aka vodka): Ukrainian Traditional Horilka is a pepper horilka. You will recognize it by the yellowish color and a small red pepper inside the bottle. Look for Ukrainian brands like Nemiroff. Another good brand is Hetman (the bottles carry portraits of Ukrainian military leaders of the past)

Caviar: not an Ukrainian traditional product, but still a good present. Depending on how much you are willing to spend, go for red or black. Make sure it comes from the places like Sakhalin or Arkhangelsk.

Tea: not an Ukrainian traditional product, it¡¦s imported from all over the world, but still a good present. Look for the tea department (Svit Chayu) which sells loose tea from the jars. The selection is amazing. You buy as little as 50 gr or as much as you wish ƒº

The Kyiv Cake: last but not the least. If you have room and can carry a cake, the Kyiv tort is a MUST. It¡¦s as popular among Ukrainians and people from the former Soviet Union as Zacher Torte in Austria. bize flour, full of peanuts (traditional) or hazelnuts (new variant) and heaviest cream topping :). It comes in special chestnut-leaf themed box. Other cakes are Prague (chocolate, resembles Zacher) and Truffles. (brand - Roshen or any other)

chocalates (depending on the box size - $4 - $7), chocolate bars- $2-3
    brandy - $12-20 per bottle
    horilka - $3-10
    caviar - $7 and up
tea - $4 per 100 gr. and up
Kyiv Cake (depending on size) - $3 and up

Mango, Promod, Motive, Naf Naf, etc.: SALES, or the best time to shop in Kyiv
  • Tip Rating:
  • Generally speaking, women's (men') cloth (especially imported cloth) in Kyiv can be very expensive (most foreigners believe the prices are absolutely outrageous :) unless you know WHEN to shop :) more and more shops are adopting the SALE strategy (a rare thing even 10 years).

The semi-annual winter SALE in Kyiv usually starts January 10 and lasts till the end of February; the summer one – about June 15, and lasts till the end of July.

European and International brands you can find in Kyiv include: Mango, Mexx, Motivi, Promod, United Colors of Benneton, Guess, Orsay, Puma, Adidass, Naf Naf, InWear, etc.

you can do as good as $5-15 for a T-shirt or blouse, $10-25 for a skirt, $25-40 for pants, $35 and up for the jacket, etc.

  • Theme: Women's Clothes
  • Directions: down Khreschatyk (Mango, Motive, Promod and other shops of Argo Trading Inc; can be recognized by big letter A on red background); Naf Naf in Passazh (first left street off Khreschatyk), Naf Naf on 24 Sahaidachny St. (Kontraktova Ploscha, Podil)

Andriyevsky Decent: Best Days to Shop for Arts and Crafts
  • Tip Rating:
  • A lot has been written about the Andriyevsky decent as the place to shop for local arts and crafts. My personal opinion, most of arts and crafts there are tourist-oriented and very often are not the best what Ukrainian artists have to offer.

how’re, there are two days in the year when I ALWAYS go to Andriyevsky to stock for souvenirs: the Kyiv Day (last weekend of May) and the Independence Day (August 24). these are two holidays for which artisans from all over Ukraine come to Kyiv. I call these two days “the Arts and Crafts Feast.”

Then you can find beautiful pottery from Western Ukraine and Crimea, hand-made jewelry (enamel-painted earrings and bracelets), and many others things you name it.

the prices with vary, depending on what you are looking to buy. the prices are not final, you can always bargain ;)

  • Theme: Local Craft
  • Directions: from the center: pass St. Sofia Cathedral, cross Velyka Zhytomyrska and continue walking. you will not miss it. from Podil: take the funiculor from Poshtova Sq.; the first right turn (Desyatynna St.) will lead you to Andriyevska Church
