The Dnepr (Dnipr) River, the third-longest river in Europe, is located in western Russia and Ukraine. It is 2,290 km (1,420 mi) long, from its source in the Valdai Hills west of Moscow to its swampy, delta mouth at the Black Sea. Its course takes it generally south and west past Smolensk, Kiev, Dnepropetrovsk, and Kherson. Draining a basin that covers 518,000 sq km (200,000 sq mi), the main tributaries of the Dnepr include the Berezina, Pripyat, Sozh, Ingulets, and Desna rivers. Dredging and damming have made almost the entire river navigable for the nine months of the year when it is not frozen. The Dnepr carries heavy freight and is an important source of hydroelectric power. Leave a Comment

The Funicular (cable car) was built in 1905 and until now it offers quick, exciting and inexpensive rides from Podil (Lower Kiev) up to Mykhailivska Ploscha (Upper Kiev). The ride is short (about 2 minutes) but it is worth seeing a magnificent panorama of Kiev and the Dnepro River that uncovers from the Funicular. The cost is the same as the fares in city transport except Sundays, when the ride is free. Leave a Comment
