Kreschatyk is the main street that runs through most of central Kyiv. During weekends and bank holidays the street is shut to cars and buses and the streets fill with buskers, entertainers and people just hanging out enjoying the ambience. Kreschatyk is lined with cafe's and shops and also leads to some of the great market places in central Kyiv in one direction and to the fabulous Independence Square and Dynamo Kyiv stadium in the other direction. During bank holidays you may also find concerts being held along Kreschatyk, these concerts usually start at midday and carry on through the evening until about 10-11 o'clock. There are many refreshment stalls along Kreschatyk selling hot dogs, ice creams, cigarettes etc.

Kreshchatik is the hub of downtown Kiev. It’s the central business district with lots of high end stores, businesses, and restaurants. To me Kreshchatik appeared to be a cross between Wall Street and 5th Avenue in New York City. It contained both the hustle and bustle of a city, along with fashionably well-dressed people, with ample stores scattered among the business centers.

Khreshchatyk Street on weekends and holidays

    Khreshchatyk street

A central street of Kiev is closed for auto traffic on Saturdays and Sundays, and also on state holidays. Pedestrians walk on the road where you will see cars during work days. Many street performers show what they can: sing, dance, joke, play different instruments. It is possible to find a performance for a different taste. Street vendors sell food and drinks, including beer and other low-alcohol drinks right on the street.

    End at Market

Kreshatik is a main avenue of the city. It starts from arc of friendship and ends at the Market. Maidan is right in the center of Kreshatik.

There are plenty of things to do around there - eat, shop, usually there is always an event or a festival. And a good thing there are no cars allowed on the weekend, so you can freely walk on the street.

Khreshchatyk street is the main street of Kiev. The name is derived from the Slavic word khrest (cross). The street was destroyed during World War II by the retreating Red Army and rebuilt in the neo-classical style Stalinist architecture. The street has been significantly renovated during the modern period of Ukraine's independence. The street is the administrative and business center of the city and as a popular place to hang around for the people. It is a wide boulevard with plenty of chestnut trees.

The Street is closed to traffic on the weekends!

One of my favorite things to do in Kiev is just kicking back on Kreshadek Street. It is the main street of Kiev. At one end is Independence Square where the Orange Revolution took place. At the other end is "The Arena" which is an entertainment/shopping complex owned by the Klitchko boxing brothers. You will never run out of entertainment if you stick to this street. A top spot on the planet for people watching.

Everything is really hugh there - the width of the street itself and the height of the buildings. Sometimes in the afternoon it is closed for traffic and people walk on the street (see picture).
