The National Opera House is a wonderful building reflecting the culture and beauty of Kiev. We enjoyed a performance of the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" by Prokofief..The prices were very reasonable and the performance was outstanding.
The National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet is among the oldest theatres in Ukraine. It was founded in 1867 when Ukraine was a part of the Russian Empire. A fire burned down the whole building on February 4 1896, and was later rebuilt in Neo-Renaissance style. The Kiev Opera is today one of the most venerable opera houses in Europe.
Note: Picture no 2 is the building opposite the Opera. Just to show how different architecture can be.
We went to the National Ukraine Opera House. The shows change daily, and in December we had no problems buying tickets an hour before the show. The listing for the coming week is shown on the building, and in a brochure.
It is not expensive (comparative to English theatre), 50 or 60 gryvna, and programmes are about 4 or 5 gryvna. It *should* be free to put your coat in the cloakroom (which MUST be done, bags are optional) but if you are doing this last minute and the attendent is not the friendliest, then you may have to pay a 'tourist tax' to persuade them to take your coat.
It is an amazing building. Beautiful architecture and decoration. Well worth a trip.
Taras Shevchenko Opera And Ballet House; a majestic building, a must see.
Built by Victor Shreter and Vladimir Nikolaiv. Situated at the front, right of the building is the Statue Of Ukrainian Composer Nikolai Lysenko
The National Ukrainian Opera is a wonderful place to spend a rainy or snowy evening. At the time I was there, tickets for a pretty good seat could be purchased for as little as 5$US. I was able to see Nabucco, Madame Butterfly, The Nutcracker, The Marriage of Figaro, and many other wonderful performances and productions. You can find the listing of upcoming performances at the Opera's website, but unfortunately they are only listed in Ukrainian.
Very great perfomances! Great actors/actresses and musicians!
Every time I go there, I enjoy it very much! And aslo got great responses from all my friends who's been there.
Better buy tickets at the Opera Theater ticket place (called "Kasa")
Tickets are from $1 to $15... sometimes can be higher. Depends on the performance...
