Pyrohiv/Pirogovo - a must see attraction in Kiev
Originally a village south of Kiev now Pyrohiv/Pirogovo is an unique open-air museum of traditional Ukrainian architecture and way of life. It's a must see attraction for tourists and everyone who is willing to learn more about the life of the Ukrainian rural population in the past. This museum was found in 1969 year and is with area of 370 acres, it is exhibiting around 300 buildings (houses, churches, wind-mills, etc.) from different Ukrainian regions. These original buildings from Middle Ages till early XX century (I have been told that the oldest exhibit is a house from 1587, the oldest church is from 1742 year!) were disassembled by parts in different regions of the country, transported to this museum and rebuilt on the spot. There is also a huge collection of folk costumes, furniture, utensils, musical instruments, etc. so you really could see and somehow feel how life looked in these old times. There are a lot of musicians and artisans dressed in traditional costumes who are playing old instruments and selling recordings of their music and hand-made products/souvenirs.
There are two or three restaurants inside the museum where you can try original Ukrainian cuisine (nothing fancy thoughas interior though) as well as small shops selling gifts and souvenirs where you can buy something to remind you of Ukraine, Kiev and Pirogovo.
There is a bus going there, you can catch a taxi or go there by car (it's 30 min away from the city centre) - there is a free parking next to the entrance of this unique museum.

Pyrohovo, a Kyiv Scansen
a Kyiv scansen Pyrohovo is one favorite places for an escape from the city bustle for some fresh air, a pleasant stroll or jsut relaxing in a shadow with a book. Pyrohovo is especially popular during celebration of various Ukrainian holidays, expecially Christmas and Easter, as and numerous festivals and fairs, where you can buy traditional staff for a reasonable price.
the scancen also holds the biggest and the richest collection of Ukrainian traditional (rural) architecture. It has 275 wooden structures dating to XVI—XX cent. Village houses, along with households, churches, wind/ water mills, are grouped to resemble their original geografic locations. The whole area is divided into nine parts: middle Naddniprianschyna (kyiv and cherkasy oblast); Slobozhanschyna, Poltavschyna, Polissia, Podillia, Karpaty, South of Ukraine; Mills; Fair field and contemporary village. The museum has a big collection of costumes, furniture, wooden and clay dishes, and good collection of the music instruments.
Unfortunately, the lack of state funds, complemented with extremely low cost of an admission ticket (8 UAH), as well as lack of full understanding of the value of the artifacts is obvious. Wind-mills look like they have recently lost a battle to the Don-Quixote, and someone's merciful hand has supported them with “crutches” to prevent from falling. The houses' interiors would definitely benefit from at least a seasonal cleaning. Had they looked like that in their past, single girls from those households would never get married, as no one would take a lazy bum for wife :) even more dramatic for the museum was intertional burning of four old households located in Karpaty area in 2006.
nevertheless, it's a place worth a visit, especilly from April to October. The museum is open from 10 to 17:00 every day.

Pirogovo is a place where you can see the historic side of the Ukraine.
It is a historical museum of houses and how people lived in the various regions of the Ukraine. They took the original houses and moved them to Pirogovo. I think you can drive inside during the week but on weekends you must walk and keep in mind that you really walk there!!!
The houses are wonderful and if you are a nice person - like me - it is possible that a woman there opens the house for you and you can sit on a historical bed :-)
Go there and enjoy the history!
It reminded me a little bit on the mountain houses of Austria. I think 100 years ago it looked more or less the same everywhere. The distances are very far, I was really tired in there walked around all these regions...
Donot use the toilet close to the entry or hope that they already built a new one, it is old, wood and dirty...better use the bushes ;-)
