Carriage inside view by Bobek Most probably the Kiev metro (or subway) will be the means of transportation that every new visitor will use prior to all the other means apart from taxi. In the past it has been a bit difficult to use the sub as everything was in Cyrillic. But now Kiev municipality has obviously noticed the lack of signs for English speaking guests in the city. Kyiv, Metro Map by Dialing Metro System is quite convenient for getting around in Kyiv. Obviously much better - if not in "rush" hours, which are 6-9 a.m, 5-8 p.m, during this time please take taxi (which is appr. 1,5-2 hrn for 1 km). And if you have a Map - you can travel quite well!!! :) Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro

The three change stations on Kiev metro system by Bobek If you are not familiar with east European cities and their subway systems, the Kiev metro might puzzle you. There are 3 lines you can travel and they have different colours on the metro map and are also described accordingly: (text removed) Leave a Comment Theme: Subway/Metro

The most comfortable and the fastest way to get Kiev is airplane, of course. There is an internationa airport in Borispol', the little town near of Kiev. By car it's 20 minutes to get the city. For Kiev-Moscow there are several aircrafts including Aeroflot, Aerosvit and S7. Last time for Moscow-Kiev-Moscow by S7 I paid RUR 6550 (EUR 188) around. Although it was a special offer. As far as I know that usual price is RUR 8000 around (EUR 230) Leave a Comment Theme: Airplane

Metro by Lensa Taxies: if you get a taxi somewhere on the street, it will cost twice or three times more than it actually costs... But if you are stuck, try to take a taxi with telephone numbers written on it... your damage will be less:-) Always punch your ticket while riding a bus, tram or a trolley bus. You can purchase tickets at the bus stops(preferable) or from a conductor on the trolley or bus. "Marshrutka" - a minibus will offer you a faster and more comfortable ride for a little extra money. But still the best (fastest) way to get around is metro...but :-) if you know cyrillic or somebody who can explain you your rout. They've already started to write metro stops in Latin! but.. only inside the metro carriages above doors! Good luck! Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The Boryspil Airport is located outside of Kyiv, and getting from the airport to the city center could be a hassle especially if one doesn't speak Ukrainian and Russian. in the future, the city is planning to extend the metro green line to Boryspil and we all look forward to that. but meanwhile, the options are limited to taxi and bus. upon your exit from the airport, you will be approached by many taxi drivers "preying" for foreign tourists. if money is not an issue, taxi is a way to go. Be prepared to negotiate and stick to your price. whatever a taxi driver tells you, the normal price is between $25 and 30 (Russian - dvadtsat pyat - tridtsat dolarov). if you are on budet, however, take a bus (Polit), or mini bus especially if you need to catch a train. it will take you directly to the Central Railway Station. buses run every 30 min 24/7. the price for a one-way ticket cost 25 UAH (around $5). the bus makes one stop - at Kharkivska metro station (green line) (tell a driver in advance, so he will not charge you for the whole route. price to Kharkivska is around 12 UAH ($2)). this is especially useful if you are in a hurry and/ord travelling in rush hour, you might consider switching from the bus to subway there - no traffic jam garanteed :) and it will cost you just 1 hryvnia 50 kopeik ($0.2)

From the airport you can use busses or mini-busses to go to the city. I got mini-bus, that stops in front of the airport, a bit to the right. I went to the nearest metro station Khr'kivska and paid UAH 17 (EUR 2.5). Besides the same mini-bus has Railway Station as a last stop and you may go there for UAH 22 (EUR 3.2). On my way back I waited for the bus on the same metro station but unexpectadly I found out that some drivers offered to go to the airport for UAH 20 in the car (a bit more than in the bus). They got 3-4 passengers usually and in general they have good money. Leave a Comment Theme: Bus

The people at the train station are not the friendliest if you do not speak Ukrainian/Russian. When buying tickets it is best to write down (preferably in cryllic script if you can) the departure station, date and time, then arrival station and date and time. Also the class you require (kupe is a berth of 4). Hand this paper over to the lady. Double check the ticket when you recieve it, it will be laid out in a format similar to below: Train number, departure day and month, time, wagon number and class (k=kupe), [other stuff we didn't work out] departure station - arrival station bed number, an even number means top bunk, odd means bottom bunk. [other stuff we didn't work out] Your name according to passport the cost, the first number being the final cost you pay the arrival day, month and time. [other stuff we didn't work out] If the ticket is wrong, they will cancel it and refund you, minus 2 gryvna (20p) admin charge. When you get on the train, unlike Russian trains, you need to buy your sheets (well, hire) so this is the first thing the conductor will ask you for, so keep some loose change (about 8 gryvna) for this. The phrase "taxi" is a little misleading. In Kiev, almost any car will stop for you if you put your arm out. There are no meters: justagree on a price with your driver. In general, if you are paying more than 20 Hr for a ride anywhere within the city, you r probably a tourist. Start with a low price and work from there. In Ukraine, you hail cars by sticking your arm out horizontally, then telling the driver the destination before discussing a price. If where you want to go isnt on his way, he may drive off without another word. Leave a Comment Theme: Other
